Machinery and OEM builders design safety into their equipment
following the ISO 13849 " Safety of machinery " , which
was updated a few years ago to clarify Category 2 requirements
so interpretation is easier for users. Now when the machine risk
is relatively low, OEM designers can opt for a more streamlined
safety implementation by using Category 2 instead of a more
rigorous safety implementation using Category 3 or 4.

Fast Linear Modules Provide High
Precision with Direct Drive Linear
Motors for Industrial Automation
PI introduces two new series of direct-drive linear modules,
geared for machine builders and system integrators. The V-855
and V-857 product families
were designed for highload
and high duty cycle
industrial precision motion
applications where
traditional actuators or linear
slides with lead-screw
or timing-belt drives are
not precise, robust or reliable
enough. Due to the
maintenance-free and friction
free high-speed linear
motors, greater productivity
with shorter cycle times
and faster return on investment
can be achieved. The new, ready-to-install linear motor
modules are beneficial for all high-performance applications,
where positioning or scanning with smooth, vibration free
motion, minimum tracking errors, and short settling times are
required.
The new closed-loop linear slide module/actuator product
families provide high load capacity to 220 lbs (1000 N)
and large travel ranges up to 47 in (1200 mm) with highly repeatable
minimum incremental motion of 100 nanometers.
Position feedback is via integrated linear encoders, available
down to 1nm resolution.
Acceleration is as rapid as 5G's and top speeds of 196 in/sec
(5 m/sec) can be reached. Because of the play-free and backlash-free
direct-drive mechanics, settling times are extremely
short, and bidirectional repeatability is excellent.

Robert Goldberg (r.goldberg@ieee.org) has over 35 years' experience
with over 25 years in management of the design and
development of hardware and software for a broad range of
military electronic products involving digital, RF/Microwave,
electro-optical and electromechanical systems. He is
retired from ITT Aerospace Communications Division in
Clifton, NJ, where he was responsible for Sensor Communication
programs utilizing the application of sensor radios
developed by ITT as a result of work with DARPA on the
Small Unit Operations Situation Awareness System (SUOSAS).
Prior to joining ITT, he held positions in systems test
and systems engineering with Northrop Grumman in programs
related to RF and IR electronic warfare systems. He
is a Fellow of the IEEE and is currently chairman of the Fellows
Evaluation Committee of the IEEE Instrumentation and
Measurement Society.
