collection and management so that information can be shared
between researchers and studies are reproducible. Additionally,
for smart home and sensor platforms to be used in eHealth
to guide clinical care, data from in-home sensors require validation
to ensure the accuracy of information collected on physical
and health measures. The CART initiative has developed a scalable,
home-based technology platform to help address these
challenges and that will accelerate the implementation of new
studies for aging in place research. Collaborations with researchers
in the AGE-WELL network are testing new sensor
types and data fusion and real-time data analytic techniques
for monitoring cognition. Other international collaborations
are exploring the use of the platform in new study populations
(e.g., veterans, FTD) and how it can be used to monitor chronic
health conditions and guide changes in health behavior.
Home-based sensor platforms can provide detailed, longitudinal
assessment of cognitive, physical and health domains
to help monitor cognition and chronic health issues. These systems
are effective at detecting changes in day to day activities
that occur in individuals developing cognitive impairment.
The use of high-frequency data collection with multiple sensor
types can detect early changes in day-to-day variability in
the performance of activities that may appear before a decline
in functioning is clinically apparent. Further work in realtime
data analytics and feedback response systems will help
to bring the benefits of smart home and sensor technologies to
end-users to support independence in the home.
