Women in Metrology (WIM): 2022 First Forum
W
omen in Science, Technology Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) initiatives have been emphasized
in recent years because of the " glass
ceiling " that still exists to this day. Within these efforts, it is vital
to always observe that depending on where you are born/
grew up/work, to be a successful woman in Engineering and
Science can be an even higher mountain to climb [1].
Worldwide, most people do not know what metrology is
even though they understand all manufacturing and trade.
The world of metrology is for everyone. The Metrology for All
Network is committed to making this a reality [2].
Metrology for All is a volunteer program that seeks to increase
awareness of metrology. Its main purpose is to support
women in metrology in Africa and developing countries. The
program is also designed to help children in identifying their
careers. All activities within this platform are totally voluntary.
We achieve our aims through the passion and hard work
of our team of volunteer scientists. Among the volunteers are
fantastic teams of physicists, engineers, and chemists from
measurement and calibration laboratories in developing
countries. They come alongside scientists from non-developing
countries working in metrology who are standing up for
women in metrology in Africa and developing countries, to
disseminate the concept of volunteering work in this field and
to encourage others to participate in it.
Women in Metrology gathered for their first forum organized
by the Metrology for All platform, The Coordinate
Metrology Society's Women in Metrology Committee, and
other partners around the world including Amotech Africa,
Fluke Corporation, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement
Society, and PTB. The forum kicked off on March 8, 2022
to coincide with International Women's Day. This free online
event supports the development of a thriving metrology community
of women scientists and engineers and promotes skills
development for women interested in a career in metrology.
We hope and intend that the example of these thoughtful leaders
will show girls and women with an interest in metrology
that they can reach the very top of the field [2]-[4]. Our guests
from different countries, women from international organizations,
and corporations provided input at the event.
Forum Program
Day 1, March 8, 2022
In two-hours of presentations, the speakers who presented on
Women in Technology and Women in Metrology and shared
36
their experiences included: Eng. Amy Gritzinger (Technical
Support Engineer at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence,
Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS), USA); Dr. Judy AmanorBoadu
(Analog Engineer, Intel Corporation, USA); Amanda
Lewis (Technical Support Specialist at Hexagon Manufacturing
Intelligence, USA); Eng. Souad Bouaziz (Head of the Arab
Program for Scientific and Industrial Metrology ADIMSO and
Director of Legal Metrology at the National Metrology Agency,
Tunisia); Prof. Hala Abd El-Megeed (Professor at the National
Institute of Standards, Egypt); Nfono Joseline (Director of
Metrology, Gabon); and Ghufran Abed Al Nabi (Business Development
Manager, Fluke, UAE).
It was great to hear these fantastic perspectives and career
journeys from so many accomplished women. Centrally,
these wonderful presentations had reflected the vital role of
women in metrology; therefore, this will encourage more to
join the field.
Day 2, March 9, 2022
Session One: Poster presentations from women studying metrology
were coordinated by Eng. Beth Wanjiku from Amotech
Africa Kenya as the session chair. Research from five female
scientists was presented on the following topics:
◗ Soumaya Chaieb from INRAP Tunisia presented her
advancement dissertation toward a National Strategy in
Metrology in chemistry on keys for quality and measurement
infrastructure assurance.
◗ Eng. Rehab Sherif Salah Eldeen from NIS Egypt presented
the effects of waveforms distortion for household
appliances on power quality. The voltage and current
waveforms for each appliance have been measured by a
power network analyzer and then simulated and plotted
using MATLAB program. The study shows the high distortion
for the current waveform of the electronic devices and
a good impact of the resistive load on power quality.
◗ Eng. Kwther Adam from SSMO Sudan presented
the effect of temperature on the verification of infusion
pumps. She studied and calculated the flow rate
of an infusion pump by gravimetric method and used
an infusion device analyzer in two different standard
temperatures to deduce the effect of temperature on the
verification of infusion pumps to captivate the patient
safety and legal metrology.
◗ Eng. Eman Mohamed Hosny from NIS Egypt presented
