similar to 2020, the Symposium
was again forced to
move to a virtual platform.
The online event reached
a wider audience in times
of travel restrictions, while
maintaining the highquality
content MeMeA is
known for. This way, the
MeMeA community continued
to stay together and
grow, providing a common
ground and establishing
stronger relations and research
collaborations.

This year, from June 22 to 24, 2022 the MeMeA Community
met again in Italy, in Giardini Naxos (Messina, Sicily, Fig.
2). The 17th edition of the Symposium dealt with all the aspects
of interactions among the worlds of the instrumentation
and measurement, bio-engineering, material science, chemical
and biological measurements, and the medical field, as
the previous ones. The conference of this year focused on: (i)
medical and instrumentation uncertainty and calibrations; (ii)
metrology for medical measurements; sensors and devices for
medical measurements; (iii) biosignal processing; (iv) measurement
and quality control in medical preparations; (v)
standards for medical applications; (vi) embedded systems for
measurement. Moreover, papers were presented describing
applications of measurement and measurement methods in: (i)
rehabilitation, (ii) biomedical robotic methods, (iii) acoustics
and ultrasonics, (iv) Internet of Things (IoT) in medicine; (v)
patient safety; (v) medical imaging and communication, and
(vi) environmental safety.
MeMeA 2022 represented a great opportunity for all professionals
in the medical measurements field and TC-25 members
to meet again in person, renewing the interest in increasing interactions
among them. Many researchers attended, making
MeMeA 2022 one of the most successful editions of the Symposium.
The conference format was almost entirely in person,
with a few exceptions when remote presentations were given
by authors who could not travel at the very last time. The

Science and Technology. She is Member-at-Large of the Administrative
Committee of the IEEE Instrumentation and
Measurement Society (IMS) and Tutorial chair of the IMS Educational
Committee, 2020-2023. She has been a member of
the Steering Committee of the IEEE-International Symposium
on Medical Measurement and Applications (MeMeA) since
2013. She is Secretary of the IEEE TC-25 on Medical and Biomedical
Measurements and member of the TC-17 on Materials
in Measurements of the IMS. She received the M.S. degree in
chemistry from the University of Torino in 1999 and her Ph.D.
degree in metallurgical engineering at Politecnico di Torino in
2004. Her research activities are in the fields of chemical/physical
fundamentals of plasma processes, corrosion of metals
and alloys, conservation of cultural heritage, sensors and biomedical
measurements. She is also Associate Editor of the IEEE
Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement.
Sabrina Grassini (SM '18) joined the Politecnico di Torino,
Italy in 2007, where she is currently Associate Professor of
applied physical chemistry in the Department of Applied

Sergio Rapuano (M '00, SM '10), Ph.D., is a Full Professor of
electrical and electronic measurement with the Department
of Engineering of the University of Sannio in Benevento, Italy.
He is Member-at-Large of the Administrative Committee, Vice
President for Education and past Vice President for Membership
of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society
(IMS), Chair of the IEEE Italy Section, Chair of the IMS TC25
Medical and Biological Measurements and Subcommittee
Chair of the IMS TC-10 Waveform Generation, Measurement
and Analysis. He participated in the realization of three IEEE
standards and coordinated the working group that developed
the new IEEE 2414 standard. He is Secretary of the Steering
Committee of the IEEE International Symposium on Medical
Measurement and Applications (MeMeA). His research
interests include ADC and DAC modelling and testing, digital
signal processing, distributed measurement systems, and
medical measurement.
