useful in the design and use of robots, especially from a mechanical
point of view. The intent is to help students acquire a
basic set of analytical tools and expertise for working in the robotics
field.
Lecturing: Given by Dr. Olga Fink at ETH Zürich, the lecture
" Towards Intelligent Operation and Maintenance of Complex
Systems " was invited by Prof. Weihua Li to provide an overview
of the ongoing research in the Department of Intelligent
Maintenance Systems at ETH Zürich, including: 1) research
in the field of domain adaptation and unsupervised transfer
learning for fault detection and diagnostics; 2) research
on algorithms combining deep learning and physics-based
approaches; 3) research in prescriptive operations; and 4) research
on multi-agent systems for maintenance scheduling
and decision support.
Another lecture " Industrial AI and Smart Manufacturing "
was given by Dr. Jay Lee, a Distinguished Professor at
the University of Cincinnati. The lecture provided a systematic
overview of the current research on smart manufacturing
systems, including: 1) the history and development of smart
manufacturing systems in real industry; 2) the main characteristics
of modern intelligent maintenance systems; and 3)
current academic research, industrial cases, and future directions
of smart manufacturing systems.
Public Service
TC-3 is dedicated to providing platforms for the members to
display their talents and competencies. As a result, TC-3 chairs
and members have had plenty of opportunities to serve in
other related public positions. For example, TC-3 Chair Prof.

as Vice President of
the Equipment and Maintenance
Engineering Branch
under the Guangdong
Provincial Mechanical Engineering
Society and also
serves as a member of the
editorial board of journals related to condition monitoring and
fault diagnosis, such as IEEE Sensors Journal, Journal of Dynamics,
Monitoring and Diagnostics, Chinese Journal of Mechanical
Engineering, and IET Collaborative Intelligent Manufacturing.
Furthermore, Prof. Ruqiang Yan, a key partner of TC-3,
who is also the chair of TC-7 " Signals and Systems in Measurement, "
was promoted as the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of IEEE
Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIM) and
achieved IEEE and ASME Fellow recognition. Active roles
played by TC-3 members would gather research and industrial
resources from multiple sources for future development.
Future Plans and Activities
Aiming at encouraging research on condition monitoring and
fault diagnosis, TC-3 will focus on the diagnosis and maintenance
of major equipment in the fields of industrial robots,
new energy, high-speed rail transit, nuclear plants, etc. In
terms of organizing events related to condition monitoring
and fault diagnosis and facilitating the exchange of knowledge
between scientists, TC-3 will be an active participant to
organize several conferences and seminars in the coming future.
Through multiple academic activities, TC-3 will contact
more academic and industrial resources and experts, which
will also potentially be a start for new research projects. Young
talented engineers will get more opportunities to learn and to
show themselves on an international stage. These academic activities
will be pillars for exploring new grounds for the future.
In the further future, TC-3 will continue to follow the guidance
of the IMS and emphasize the attraction of new members
and international communications in the long-term operating
plan.
