three-dimensional environment by the fish [10]. If an object
is projected onto a 2D sensory surface, there is no apparent
relationship between the spatial properties of the object and
the shape of the electrical image, as electric images are usually
blurred [10]. However, different combinations of signal
parameters allow the fish to identify a single object parameter,
as shown in behavioral studies on object localization [6],
[11], [12].
In this work, the aspect of object localization and size is investigated
in a detailed
simulation study based on
a highly simplified model
of the weakly electric fish,
as shown in Fig. 1c. The fish
is abstracted to a dipole
(positive pole red, negative
pole blue) with a sensor
line (green) in between the
two emitters. The measured
voltage over the
sensor line (blue) results
from a field distortion by a
round, conducting object.
With this abstracted model
different features were extracted,
which allowed the
estimation of object distance
and size. Based on the
biological example, a time
efficient simulation model
for object localization in
electric fields was derived.

This model features an electrical dipole field, round objects in
an aqueous environment, and allows investigation of signal
features for a static sensor line and those which are suited for a
moving sensor line. Both the static and moving sensor line represent
the voltage-sensitive skin of fish.
Simplified Analytical Simulation Model
A basic and simple abstraction of the weakly electric fish as a
foundation for an analytical simulation model is shown in Fig. 2.
