heavy, which is going to be addressed in the next prototype
revision.
More See Far clinical trials are currently ongoing, and the
corresponding outcomes are going to be presented in future
works, along with the incorporation of this feedback, in the
next prototype revision.
Conclusions
Progressive reduction of visual ability impacts people's
daily lives and working abilities, and also affects care organizations,
welfare systems and the society at large. Expected
impacts range from productivity losses from reduced labor
market participation, through lower employment quality
and premature mortality associated with low vision and
blindness, to deadweight welfare loss associated with raising
additional tax revenues to fund health care services and
provide direct payments to people with visual impairments.
In the present work, a See Far human-machine system was
presented, which aims to develop a digitally-enabled adaptive
solution to support the aging workforce who have vision
impairments, helping people remain actively involved in
professional life. The development of the frame of the See Far
smart glasses solution, the integration of COTS components,
the smart glasses prototype, as well as its key testing points
and results were described.
See Far smart glasses will succeed in reaching their expected
impact because they provide a holistic intervention
that addresses the visual impairment needs of the target
population and can trigger a mindset change in the company
stakeholders (e.g., human resources departments, line

Towards this goal, however,
the combination of
digital technology innovation,
clinical research in
age-related visual impairment
progression, human
resources development,
and organizational changes
in business processes are
required in a synergic way.
The next steps regarding
further development and
improvement of See Far
smart glasses involve accumulation
of feedback
provided by the system's
end users who are going to
participate in the clinical
studies and the initiation
of its next development
phase.
