Temperature Recording Module
The temperature recording module is the new module in
ECPT compared with eddy current testing (ECT). Traditional
ECT uses an eddy current probes array to record the information
from the specimen surface. On the other hand, ECPT uses
infrared sensors and collects the surface temperature information
instead of eddy current information.
Infrared thermography has two advantages: one is the
higher image resolution of up to pixel level; another is the flexibly
adjusted field of view according to the specimen's size. At
present, the highest resolution of commercial infrared cameras
can reach the order of micron, while the resolution of
commercial eddy current arrays usually reaches the order of
millimeter scale. As for the range of field of view, ECPT can adjust
it flexibly through adjusting the focal length of the infrared
camera or by changing the relative position between the specimen
and IR probe. In contrast, the eddy current probes array

cannot change the field of view unless it is being replaced by
a different sized one. In ECPT, the main requirements for the
temperature recording module are sampling rate and maximum
resolution. At present, most IR sensor used in papers
support at least 200 Hz sampling rate and 240*320 resolution.
Additional Device
In addition to the two basic modules mentioned above, additional
devices are sometimes needed to improve the detection.
For example, in the process of energizing the coil, due to the
high amplitude and frequency of current, the coil may develop
a high temperature, which has negative impact on the judgment
of defect information. In this case, a water-cooling device
can be connected to the hollow coil to reduce the temperature.
The coil can also be coated with black rubber to absorb
the thermal radiation. For another example, when the surface
of the specimen is relatively smooth, the reflection of infrared
