CRACKING THE SURGE IN
AUTO GLASS FRAUD

Even the most careful drivers are unable to protect their
vehicles from the normal wear and tear of car ownership.
Though they may be unpleasant to look at, dings, dents, and
scrapes don't usually make a car unsafe to drive.
Auto glass damage, especially damage to a vehicle's windshield,
can start with a chip or small crack and end with a hefty
replacement bill, as well as make a car unsafe to drive. When a
windshield is hit by hail or a rock bouncing up from the road,
legitimate damage to the windshield could become worse
and affect the driver's vision if the proper repairs aren't done
in time. When legitimate damage is done to a windshield,
insureds often report this damage to their insurance carriers,
and are then sent to a reputable glass company for repair or
replacement.
While most auto glass companies are there to help drivers in
need, the business of windshield replacement has become a
hot bed of fraudulent activity. Florida, in particular, has seen
a rise in auto glass fraud, with criminals flocking to parking

Auto glass scams often start with representatives of auto
glass companies soliciting unsuspecting drivers in places like
convenience store parking lots, gas stations, dealerships, or
at car washes. Some fraudsters even canvass neighborhoods,
going door to door. Salespeople approach drivers and ask
if they can take a look at their vehicle. If the driver agrees,
the vendor will " inspect " the vehicle's windshield and tell
the insured that there is damage to the windshield, such as
