Allan Van Ness,
D.D.S., M.S.D.

Allan Van Ness was born in New Jersey and spent
his early years in Washington, DC, where his
father worked providing dictation equipment to
military hospitals. In 1947, the family moved to
Seattle, where his father became the regional
sales and service manager for Dictaphone Corporation.
With his early interest in creative endeavors, Allan
enjoyed working with his hands, model cars,
and planes. And in those days, we're not talking
plastic! He happily carved, shaped, and painted
the models and worked with a variety of arts and
crafts, perhaps displaying another sign of things
to come career-wise. Allan graduated from Seattle's Roosevelt High School in 1958, where he had
added music to his accomplishments in the form
of playing trumpet in the Rough Riders marching
band. He took his perpetual interest in science
to the University of Washington (UW), where he
graduated with a degree in zoology.

Bruce Hawley (BH): How exactly did you come to
choose dentistry? And orthodontics as well?
Allan Van Ness (AVN): I was headed toward
dentistry from the age of five, when I was given a
tour of the family dentist's office and lab to "see
how things worked." I realized my calling then. I
became interested in orthodontics as a patient
of Dr. E. Allen Bishop, one of the UW department
founders. In pre-dent at the University of Washington, I became interested in medicine but chose
dental school and am grateful I did. I've enjoyed
every minute of it. When I started dental school,
the vast majority of the class wanted to be orthodontists. All 11 of the first-year ortho residents
that year were the top, number one graduates
in their dental school classes. It was obvious that
all of us dental students were not going to get
into orthodontics. After my rotating internship in
the Navy at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland,
California, I spent three years in Yokohama, Japan.
