I spent time working with the orthodontist stationed there in a Navy dependents' clinic, which
rekindled my interest. After my second year in Japan, with one year to go, I returned to Seattle on
a week's leave to try and figure out what I wanted
to do with the rest of my life-stay in the Navy,
set up a private practice, associate, or teach at the
Dental School. I wasn't number one in my dental
class but was in the top 10%. Dr. John Grubb, one
of the six interns with whom I served at Oak Knoll
Naval Hospital, had just started the program. He
urged me to apply, which I did, not thinking I had
much of a chance. The following December, I received my acceptance telegram, becoming one of
11 students slated to graduate in 1972. A pleasant
surprise!
Bill McNeill, Ben Moffett, and numerous parttime clinical instructors. Halfway through his
orthodontic studies, Allan was approached by Dr.
Moore about accepting an available fellowship
in research and teaching. This in turn propelled
Allan to simultaneously complete his degree and
teach and to realize his love of scientific academia
assisting ortho students with their research in the
Primate Center. Allan continued half-time on the
faculty for the next 10 years, teaching both undergraduate dental students and periodontic, prosthodontic, and orthodontic graduate students. At
the same time, he set up practices in Bothell and
Monroe, Washington.
Allan thrived under the tutelage of Alton Moore,
Department Chair Dick Riedel, Don Joondeph,
