sample size, lack of defined selection criteria,
and no statistical analysis of the initial condition
of the samples. Thus far, only a few studies have
focused on shortening the overall treatment
time. One study reported that patients treated with SureSmile had a pooled median of 8
months shorter treatment time when compared
with those treated with conventional orthodontic treatment. But again, those cases might be
less complex, as mentioned above.19 Thus, more
studies with high-quality evidence are needed to
verify the efficiency of computer-driven customized orthodontic treatment.
7. Might there be methods yet unexplored to
assist tooth movement such as pharmacologic agents or even gene testing? Might these
areas be topics for future research?
Several studies have looked into various pharmacologic agents: growth hormone, thyroxin,
parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D in particular. While these agents can influence bone
resorption and tooth movement when localized,
their systemic effects when taken over longer
periods in conjunction with orthodontic treatment have not been determined. While there
have not been enough human clinical trials
yet, some animal studies have focused on gene
therapy and orthodontic tooth movement. They
showed an increased level of RANKL protein
with accelerated tooth movement.20 Looking to
the future, gene therapy is still under investigation to ensure it is safe and does not have any
systemic or hereditary effects for the patients.
Both topics will continue to be explored, and
further research will determine if these are
viable options.
