Portrait of a Professional

No one in our family had ever been to a dentist.
My first experience with my personal dental
care was at the hands of a fellow dental student.
I deeply immersed myself into the four-year
dental school didactic and clinical education
requirements. My class of 23 students was the
fourth to graduate from this new dental school.
After dental school, we were required to finish a
one-year internship and two years of service in
the government dental health program. About
halfway through this three-year commitment,
the dean of the dental school asked me to teach
at the university. This gave me the opportunity
to learn and teach about removable orthodontic
appliances for minor tooth movement and have
my first research experience. My mentor was a
public health dentist, Dr. Firoze Manji. That led
to the first publications on the prevalence of

malocclusions and cephalometric norms from
the entire sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South
Africa). That exciting experience started my path
into academics and stimulated a deep curiosity
about orthodontic treatment, which in Kenya
was a luxury.
Outside of school and work, my biggest personal
outlet was undertaking service and team-building activities with my temple youth, where I
formed and chaired their youth group. I also began my love for running and climbing mountains
(including Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro). One of my
most memorable experiences was as a member
of a group of six individuals who ran a 300mile relay marathon from Nairobi to Mombasa
over five days to raise money for the physically
disabled.

The Kapila family over the years enjoying one of their favorite pastimes of traveling the world to learn about cultures, cuisines, art, and
history while often participating in service activities including dental health education, needs assessment, donating books and other
necessities, and beach cleanups.
