PCSO Business

In the meantime, the Executive has been busy
representing our membership and working
behind the scenes with the other local specialty
groups as our dental governing body, the
College of Dental Surgeons of BC, is undergoing
significant changes in its board composition.
The changes were required following a review
from an external auditor to the provincial
government. With all the changes to our college
being the main focus, there unfortunately
has not been much of a response regarding
direct-to-consumer treatments in BC. It will be
something that we continue to investigate in
the upcoming year.
We have also been working with a local marketing firm to continue our local Consumer Awareness Program. This year, we are running a social
media campaign and a contest through local
online news outlets. These campaigns will run
throughout November.

California
The California Association of
Orthodontists (CAO) installed new
officers and directors on October
5, at the component breakfast
held in conjunction with the PCSO annual session
in Honolulu, Hawaii. The new executive team
includes Dr. Katie Bales, President; Dr. Boyd
Martin, President-Elect; Dr. Bahar Ghafouri, Secretary-Treasurer; and Dr. Mary Cooke, Immediate
Past-President. Newly elected directors include
Drs. Sam Berro, Rita Chuang, and Jeffrey Kwong.
Directors continuing their terms on the board
are Drs. Harry Dougherty, Mark Rashidi, Chris
Roncone, and Sheldon Salins.
CAO joined the grassroots effort alongside AAO
and the California Dental Association to advocate
for the passage of AB 1519, which includes significant policy changes related to the regulation of
self-applied orthodontic treatments administered

via telehealth and other technological platforms.
The bill passed unanimously through the legislature and was signed into law by Governor Gavin
Newsom on October 13. The law goes into effect
January 1, 2020.
An updated version of CAO's popular You and
Your Orthodontist informed consent brochure will
be available in 2020. While the existing content
remains largely the same, new sections addressing changes in the condyle and transferring to another orthodontist have been added to ensure the
brochure remains a contemporary, comprehensive
tool for orthodontists throughout the country. All
CAO patient education brochures are available on
the CAO website at www.caortho.org.
A comprehensive review of CAO's Orthodontic
Assistant Permit (OAP) program is currently
underway. The popular program guides California
orthodontists to become a licensed provider of
OAP training and supplies the coursework needed
to train assistants. The program costs significantly less than other similar offerings and saves
valuable time away from the office.
The CAO hosted a successful fall seminar on Social Media and the Orthodontic Practice in Irvine.
The half-day seminar covered a variety of digital
tools and best practices for utilizing them. Continuing education webinars will be introduced in
2020.

The Hawaii Society of Orthodontists held its business meeting on
October 17 with 16 members in
attendance, and welcomed two
new members, Brad Chun and Daniel Shin. We
discussed various business items including our
next continuing education event on March 5,
2020, sponsored by Ormco. J DeMeo gave a PCSO
update presentation as the new PCSO Director,
