Drs. Graham and Mazurat spoke to both the
doctors and team members about updates to infection prevention and control in the orthodontic
office. Recognition needs to be given to Dr. Brian
Phee for organizing the event and speakers. Also
appointed was our president-elect, Dr. Kris Currie,
whose term begins January 1, 2020. Our next
annual meeting will be in June 2020 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan. We are looking forward to another
great day of continuing education!

Our legislative and orthodontic practice divisions
have been diligent in trying to help the Dental
Quality Assurance Commission (DQAC) institute
appropriate rules for dentistry. There are three areas in which the WSSO is actively involved, which
include working with the Washington State
Dental Association and other dental specialty
organizations as well as excellent support from
the AAO legal team.

New rules for dental hygiene scope of practice
have been implemented with satisfactory outcomes. Currently, we are actively working on the
proposed dental infection control rules, which
require significant further input from us as well
as from other dental organizations. Most recently,
the DQAC has proposed rule changes focused on
specialty recognition and advertising in dentistry.
We have contacted the other clinically active specialties in the state and are working in a collaborative fashion on this important issue. This process
is complex, and if any member would like further

The WSSO Annual Educational Meeting will be on
February 14, 2020, at the Meydenbauer Convention Center. The doctor program will feature
two excellent speakers, Dr. Glenn Sameshima
from the University of Southern California and
Dr. Tung Nguyen from the University of North
Carolina. There will be an exciting staff program
featuring Andrea Cook, and also, as in past years,
in the afternoon Dr. Geoff Greenlee will present a
limited-attendance hands-on course on debonding for clinical assistants. As always, it will be a
great day of high-quality continuing education
and meeting up with colleagues and friends.
