ral progression to orthodontics. I liked that there
was no pain or injections and that full-mouth reconstruction was accomplished with the patient's
natural teeth.
JP: Where did you complete your dental education?
RM: There are several terrific dental schools in
Southern California. I was thrilled to attend Loma
Linda University, my preferred choice.
JP: Which orthodontic residency?
RM: Loma Linda University. The pendulum of
dental education was starting to swing toward
growth modification, phase I interceptive, and
nonextraction treatment. I was advised to apply to
programs with an emphasis on these concepts, and
Loma Linda fit that mold. It was a sound choice-I
received a well-rounded education at Loma Linda.

JP: Have you kept track of your classmates since
school?
RM: Most of my classmates established successful practices; one went into academics, one did
full-time mission work, and another is a dual-degree craniofacial specialist at Primary Children's
Hospital in Salt Lake City. Each followed their calling and has enjoyed a fulfilling career. Fortunately, this is a common story for orthodontists.
JP: Who were your faculty mentors?
RM: We were all impressed with Jim Wise. His
humble, insightful, and knowledgeable approach to teaching seemed to connect with us.
When Jim did something different, there was
always a well-thought-out reason. He could see
through the noise and focus on the core issue.
I always loved when I could recommend his
practice or transfer a patient to him because I
