force vector and limiting vertical side effects.
2. Our second molar bracket failure rate is
too high. We can improve this by getting a
bracket with a larger pad, using a stronger
bonding agent, and/or delaying placement of
second molar brackets until the repositioning
appointment.
3. We treat our Invisalign patients with the
expectation that refinement sets of aligners will be indicated. We should set up our
ClinChecks with two to three passive stages
at the end of every set, to give patients fresh
holding aligners between rounds.

1. The patient portal of the Invisalign website
has a column for stars, which can be color
coded to your preference. This is great for
distinguishing between patients who are
priorities, unsure if they are starting, belong to
one doctor or another in the practice, etc.
2. Resolve personal disputes among staff with
"walk and talks." Conflicts between staff will

naturally arise; instead of ignoring them or
demanding a higher level of professionalism,
encourage the staff members to take a walk
outside of the office together to talk through
their issues before returning to work. Ask
them to evaluate their situation with these
three questions: "Is this true?" "Is this kind?"
and "Is this helpful?"
3. Schedule your recall patients during months
that are slow and not necessarily on a strict
six-month interval.
This list of suggestions covers a broad spectrum
of concepts relevant to an orthodontic practice, but it is surprising to see the prevalence
of ideas that focus on interpersonal dynamics
(maybe my staff is trying to tell me something).
I'm excited to implement some of these suggestions in American Canyon, but others may
not fit our practice style. Ultimately, the 2019
PCSO Annual Session was a successful event for
the staff at American Canyon Orthodontics: we
learned, we played, and we returned a stronger
team.
