Component Reports

California
The past months in California,
like around the world, have been
spent trying to understand and
navigate new realities resulting
from COVID-19. The California Association of
Orthodontists (CAO) appointed a task force to
guide the Association's effort to advocate for
members and provide resources to assist them in
first closing and then reopening their practices
for routine care. We appreciated the collaboration
between our fellow PCSO component leaders as
we shared information and ideas to maximize our
individual efforts.
The CAO ad-interim board meeting that was
scheduled to be held March 28 in San Francisco
was held via video conference, and the board
approved a slate of officers and directors as well
as changes to bylaws that will be presented to
members this summer. The board also adopted
updates to our policy manual, and revisions to
our strategic plan are underway. Planning has
also begun for a continuing education event to be
held on October 8, 2021.

Hawaii
Currently, our component has not
had to cancel our annual meeting,
which is tentatively planned for
October 19, 2020. We continue to
keep our dues at the same rate considering the
impact of COVID-19 on everyone. Our main expense
is maintaining the HSO website. Our president has
saved the date for February 10 to 11, 2021. This is the
component meeting in Palm Desert in conjunction
with the Mid-Winter AAO meeting. We are still
waiting to elect our next president, whom we hope
will attend the component meeting, too.
For those who were able to attend the first Virtual
AAO Annual Conference, it was very informative

and well done. We send our kudos and shakas to
everyone involved who made this a reality. We
were told that the conference was recorded and
would be available free of charge to those who
registered. We are still waiting for the recordings
to be available. This would be of value because
the courses started at 3:30 am HST, and it was not
feasible for us to attend live. We appreciate all that
the AAO is doing to support its members during
the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks go out to our leaders
and volunteers, to Lili Horton for her participation
as our delegate, and to the COVID-19 Task Force.
There is a short supply of personal protective
equipment (PPE) in Hawaii, and we need the Task
Force to do what they can to help advocate for improvement in this supply chain. We also appreciate
what the task force is doing to be our advocates to
the CDC and OSHA regarding regulatory guidance.
We were scheduled to have a continuing eduction course sponsored by 3M on June 4, but this
will likely be canceled. While our 3M rep was out, I
was told that they are all currently restricted from
flying, and they do not know when this restriction
will be lifted.

Idaho
Members of the Idaho State
Orthodontic Society (ISOS) showed
great solidarity and worked closely
with the Idaho State Dental Association to reach out to state legislators regarding
Senate Bill S1295-Teledentistry. The bill aimed
to ensure parity in standard of care between
traditional dentistry and teledentistry, to provide
transparency to patients on who their providers
are and how to reach them, and to protect the
right of patients to file a complaint with the
board of dentistry. Both the Senate and House approved the bill. Ultimately, the bill was vetoed by
