2020 AAO/AAOF Honorees from the PCSO
AAOF Eugene and Pauline Blair
Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Thomas Bales

The American Association of Orthodontists
Foundation (AAOF) has announced its Eugene
and Pauline Blair Distinguished Service Award for
2020, and it is presented to Dr. Thomas Bales of
Novato, California. Bales received his DDS from
the University of the Pacific and did his orthodontic residency at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA). He has been in the practice
of orthodontics for 42 years, the last 14 years with
his daughter Dr. Katie Bales in Novato and Santa
Rosa, California. Both are regents of the AAOF.
Dr. Bales lives in Novato with his wife of 45 years,
Suzanne, and has two younger children, Peter
and Diana, both with law degrees. They have four
grandchildren.
Dr. Bales served on the board of directors of the
California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and
is a past president as well. (His daughter Katie
Bales is the current president of the CAO.) He
served two terms on the PCSO board of directors representing California and simultaneously
served on the board of the AAOF for four years.
During his term on the AAOF, he was very involved in fundraising to provide resources to digitize and preserve the Collections of Legacy Case
Studies from around the country (in conjunction
with Dr. Sheldon Baumrind of the University of
the Pacific, who coordinated that effort after the
funds were raised from hundreds of orthodontists across the United States and Canada).
Dr. Bales endowed the Thomas R. Bales Chair in
Orthodontics at UCLA in 2005. The UCLA Orthodontic Clinic is named for him as the Dr. Thomas
R. Bales Orthodontic Clinic at UCLA.
His comment on hearing the news of his receiving the Blair Award was, "Why me? I was just
enjoying giving something back to the profession
that I love. I am deeply honored."
The Eugene and Pauline Blair AAOF Distinguished
Service Award is given to a person who, in the
judgment of the Board of Directors of the AAOF,
has made exceptional contributions to the furtherance of the mission and goals of the Foundation. Previous recipients include Dr. Eugene S.
Blair, Dr. Rolf G. Behrents, Dr. Robert Morrison,
Dr. Grady L. Price, Dr. John K. Pershing Jr., Dr. Fred
A. Garrett, Dr. Robert L. Boyd, Dr. Terry Duncan,
Dr. Ron Redmond, Dr. Raymond George, Dr. Terry
Pracht, Dr. James Bray, Mr. Robert W. Hazel, and
Dr. Laura Iwasaki.
