2020 AAO/AAOF Honorees from the PCSO

Distinguished Service Award, the PCSO Award
of Merit, the PCSO Annual Session Honoree, the
PCSO Lifetime Distinguished Service Award, and
shared the 2019 Angle Society Biennial Meeting
Honoree Award with five Northern California
EHASO colleagues in November 2019.
Dr. Baughman and Carol enjoy travel (especially
European travel), photography, wine, and most
sports, especially college sports. He remains a
lifetime Ohio State football season ticket holder
and athletic booster, is past president of the Pacific Athletic Fund at the University of the Pacific
in Stockton, California, and is a charter member
of the Stockton Sunrise Rotary Club. He says, "My
wife and I were not blessed with children, but
I feel that we have helped (in some small way)
raise thousands of children throughout my orthodontic career. What a blessing!"
Comments from Dr. Baughman
2020 has been an incredible year for all of us to
say the least, and due to the unfortunate cancellation of the AAO Annual Session, I have not had
an opportunity to offer any remarks of gratitude
for my selection as the 2020 AAO Brophy Award
recipient. This award is given for lifetime service to the profession, and I am humbled for my
inclusion in this select group, however trivial my
contribution.
I have been blessed with many opportunities to
serve orthodontic organizations, including the AAO,
the PCSO, and The Angle Society. I am grateful to
belong to the greatest healthcare profession in the
world. Each day, we get to provide life-changing
service to our patients and have fun doing it!
None of us arrived at our position in orthodontics
alone. We have all stood on the shoulders of giants-parents, educators, and colleagues. I have
benefited from great mentors and role models
including Art Dugoni for his inspiration, Terry

McDonald for his passion, Vince Kokich for his
excellence in all things, and Sheldon Peck for his
mentorship in The Angle Society.
Never in my life did I imagine that my contributions would merit any recognition. I have only
sought to repay through service to our profession
what it has given to me and my family. Whatever
I have given, I have received many times over.
This profession is filled with outstanding people
and having had the opportunity to interact with
so many of them has been my honor for more
than four decades. Most of them will never be
recognized for their valuable contribution to orthodontics, so I am honored to accept this award
on behalf of all of them.
A life filled with service to others is the most
gratifying and fulfilling, and likely the reason why
each of us has chosen orthodontics as our vehicle
of expression of that gratitude. Especially, I would
like to thank the PCSO for the many opportunities
they have given me in many leadership positions.
Also, my memories serving in the AAO House of
Delegates for 20 years followed by the opportunity to serve as speaker of the house remains
preeminent to me. This challenging service will
remain amongst my fondest memories.
I believe that nothing worthwhile in life is accomplished without great passion, and I am passionate about orthodontics. I hope that my efforts on
everyone's behalf have been at least somewhat
successful.
Finally, I wish to thank my wife, Carol, for her love,
support, patience, and encouragement. She has
easily been my best mentor.
I will cherish this memory and this honor for the
rest of my life. Stay safe everyone, and be well
until we meet again.
