Honoring our PCSO Predecessors
In 2018, the PCSO Nominating and Awards Committee discussed new ways to honor and showcase
deceased PCSO members who have made significant contributions to the field of orthodontics and
our association. The committee believes that with so many movers and shakers in our specialty having
come from PCSO, we owe it to our current and future members to remind them of this rich heritage.

Eugene E. West
Dr. Gene West touched the lives of more than 150
graduates of the orthodontic program at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He guided
us in the clinic, asking for our goals, our plan, and
our reasons for them. His teaching method led us
to find solutions and then showed us the moves
that came from years of his and his father's treatment experience.
He helped us set our career goals, encouraging
us to serve not only our patients but also the

specialty, and " for heaven's sake you must take
the ABO. " If you asked for help beyond the residency, he took the time to learn what you needed
and then helped you to set a plan to find the job,
apply for a PCSO committee, or train for teaching.
He helped me find a job in an ophthalmologist's
lab while in residency, and then, when in practice,
I asked him how I could find a partner with whom
to work, he sent me Mike Meyer, my partner for
the next four decades.
Dr. West set a remarkable service example for
his students to consider, serving in the highest
positions at UCSF, American Dental Association
(ADA), PCSO (president), AAO (trustee), and ABO
(president).
