With a suitcase full of study models, Dr. Steiner
went to Pasadena to study under Dr. Edward H.
Angle. He became Dr. Angle's second student
and received his diploma in 1921. He continued to
study with Dr. Angle and helped with activities
of what became Dr. Angle's school, helping to redesign Dr. Angle's edgewise bracket into virtually
the same form that is used today.
He also developed the Steiner analysis, still a
widely used cephalometric analysis. He published prolifically, including " The Evolution of the
Mechanics of Treatment of Class II Malocclusion, "
the principles which later became known as the
Angle Group concept in the treatment of Class II
malocclusions.

Dr. Cecil C. Steiner
appealed to me was that he had on a clean white
shirt, worked in a clean office, and was doing fine
mechanical work. " When he went to his high
school principal to inform him that he planned
to go to dental college, the principal laughed
heartily and said, " Steiner, I think you had better
get a job as a pile driver instead, " which was very
disconcerting to say the least. But he also said,
" Heaven knows, not for what you have done but
for what I know you can do, I will recommend
you, " and he wrote " Recommended " across my
record. In those days that was enough to get me
into dental school.
Dr. Steiner studied dentistry at the University
of California Dental School in San Francisco, financing his education by raising bees and selling
honey. After graduation, he worked in Los Angeles
with Dr. Ray Robinson and then took over another
local practice when the practitioner passed away.

As an educator, Dr. Steiner taught at the Angle
School and gave notable short courses at universities all over the world, including in Argentina,
Brazil, Spain, Cuba, Honolulu, Peru, Venezuela,
and South Africa. He also served on the faculty at
the University of Southern California Department
of Orthodontics and was instrumental in developing graduate orthodontic courses.
He was affiliated with the AAO and PCSO, the
Charles H. Tweed Society, and the Edward H.
Angle Society, in addition to being an honorary
member of groups in Argentina, Brazil, Cuba,
Peru, Venezuela, and Hawaii. He was awarded the
AAO's prestigious Ketcham Award in 1968.
Dr. Steiner led a fascinating life, becoming an
orthodontist before most people knew what
an orthodontist was. His contributions to the
specialty, his kindness, and his generosity to the
people in his life, will continue to honor him and
his legacy.
