JP: How did you choose dentistry and orthodontics?

home mom with four children: twin boys, Daniel
and Will, age six; Owen, age four; and Grace, age
two. Our son-in-law, Ian Brennan, is a PhD scientist from Stanford and works for Genentech.
Michael, whom I call the " Renaissance Man, "
is a man of letters and a man of action. After
college, he joined the Navy as a photographer
but had his eyes set on the special operations
community. After basic training, he went to the
Navy photography school, finished top in his
class, and was accepted into the BUD/S training
program. He received his Trident the day after
September 11, 2001. Michael's 20+ year career
with the Navy has taken him to 22 countries
with deployments to the Pacific, Africa, Europe,
and the Middle East.

RC: From a very young age, I had a strong interest
in biology and life sciences. One of my uncles
was a dentist in Las Cruses, New Mexico. He was
also very involved in organized dentistry at the
state level, bringing to it an upbeat, personable,
and encouraging influence. In addition, our
family dentist in Modesto, Dr. Don Swatman,
was a state-of-the-art dentist and inventor who
developed a line of dental units and other related
equipment for his company. He was always at the
leading edge of new developments in dentistry
and always willing to share his time and show his
latest ideas. From the time I was in middle school,
I knew I wanted to be a dentist. Interestingly, in
those days, there were high school vocational
goals classes and aptitude tests. According to the
test results, I was best suited to become a television repairman, which was quite a blow to my
ego. Needless to say, I was not going to settle for
that, and it is good that I didn't, as that vocation
became extinct long ago. As far as my education
goes, I am a University of the Pacific (UOP) Tiger,
orange and black, all the way. I attended UOP in
Stockton, which is just 30 miles up Highway 99
from Modesto, for three years to complete the
required prerequisite courses in order to apply to
dental school. To my surprise, as dental school
