RC: I have always enjoyed being outdoors and
especially being in the mountains. I have a group
of friends that, for 40+ years, have gone on an
annual one-week backpacking/fishing trip, and
in our younger years, this also included technical
mountain climbing. A few of the mountains we
have summited include the east face route of Mt.
Whitney, Mt. Ritter and Banner Peak, the Grand
Teton, Mt. Darwin, and Mt. Rainier. We live just
over two hours from Yosemite Valley, and that
is where Karen and I were married. We made a
point of climbing Half Dome the day before our
wedding, and Yosemite Valley has historically
been a climbing mecca and special place of beauty and inspiration for us.
Additionally, I enjoy snow skiing and, in times
past, distance running. Since having surgery
on both knees and age-related arthritis, road
cycling has replaced running. One of my fond
achievements and as well as a disappointment is
that I once ran a 3:02 marathon in San Francisco
but was never was able to break the three-hour
mark. Now that we are empty nesters and I am
nearing the end of a 47-year career in dentistry, Karen and I look forward to cutting back on

work, spending time with grandchildren, and
traveling.
JP: What pieces of advice would you have for new
PCSO members?
RC: I would echo the advice of PCSO presidents
from the past: get involved early. My life's course
went a different direction, but looking back, I wish
I had gotten involved in the California Association
of Orthodontists and PCSO. This is our profession,
and we must guide, promote, and protect it as
much as we can, and that takes commitment
and involvement. There are many benefits to
membership in the PCSO and AAO, and as has
been said, " the more one gives, the more one will
receive in return. "
