of the teeth, condyles, and fossae. The OFS also
displays the anteroposterior (AP) orientation of
the dentition relative to the patient's face (forehead), essentially creating a virtual patient, hence
the name Occlusofacial Simulator™ (Figure 4).
PT: Let's talk about brackets. Which appliance
system are you using?
WA: The gold standard by which we judge all
appliances is the original straight-wire appliance.10 As you know, many bracket systems
vie for our attention in the marketplace. The
features differentiating one from another
include prescription values, slot sizes, materials,
convenience features (such as auxiliary vertical

slots and ball hooks), size, and ligation mechanisms. As far as we are concerned, proper design
and prescription values are the most critical.
The foundational design components of a true
straight-wire appliance include inclination in
the base, appropriate compound contours of
the base and pad, proper in-outs, and proper
maxillary molar offsets. Not all contemporary appliance systems share these features,
despite calling themselves " preadjusted. " Fully
programmed is a term we reserve for bracket
systems that incorporate all of the essential
design features as well as scientifically derived
prescription values.
We currently use an updated version of the original fully programmed straight-wire appliance
called the Andrews2 appliance, which we helped
design in 2011 (Figure 5).
