Portrait of a Professional

Probably the greatest challenge in my career has
been trying to find a way to balance my career
with my family, and honestly, when I was in the
middle of it, I did not know how well I was doing.
Now knowing my children as adults, I am so proud
of their success and so grateful that orthodontics
allowed me to be a mom and a professional.
JP: Tell us about your other activities and involvement in the PCSO.
ML: When my kids were younger, my hobbies
revolved around just keeping them alive and the
house from burning down. These hobbies eventually evolved into cooking, entertaining, as well as
a love of travel and adventure. I enjoy seeing new
places and hope to go on an around-the-world
tour someday. In the meantime, we will probably
spend time in the Airstream my husband received
as a retirement gift and visit many of the National Parks. We are also looking forward to our first
(noncanine) grandchild next spring.

PCSO executive committee two years ago and
am excited to have the opportunity to lead it this
next year. During my time on the PCSO board, I
have worked on issues relating to engagement
with all of our members and worked to create
an environment within PCSO and AAO that is
inclusive and valuable. I have served on the special committee for women orthodontists for the
past two years, and I have been so honored to
give back to a profession that I have loved. There
have been countless bright and caring leaders
who have come before me to build our organizations, and my hope is that my service will allow
orthodontics to be a wonderful career for future
generation.

As my children got a bit older, I felt like I had
the time to devote to volunteer work, and the
opportunity to join the Oregon State Society
of Orthodontists (OSSO) executive committee
presented itself. Following my term at OSSO, I
was asked to join the board of the PCSO to represent Oregon as well as to be a delegate for PCSO
to the AAO. I had the great honor of joining the

JP: Advice for new PCSO members?
ML: Learn how to get involved and then get involved. There may be times in your life that you can
volunteer for only an hour a year, and there may be
other times when you can do more. Your engagement allows the PCSO to continually improve to
meet our members' needs, but we will never know
exactly what those are without your voice.
