President's Report

President's Message
To my friends and colleagues,

PCSO President 2020-2021

As I write my first message to the members of the
PCSO, I find myself filled with gratitude for this
organization and for each of you. As we all have
navigated the many challenges of a pandemic
and an economic crisis, I am so grateful I have
not had to travel this journey alone. During a year
that has been defined by human tragedy and
massive economic disruption, we orthodontists
have generously donated supplies, adjusted our
practices with ever-changing infection control
measures, and creatively identified new ways
to treat our patients. We have shared what we
have learned and grown as a profession. Likewise,
PCSO and our orthodontic associations have
worked tirelessly to keep us informed with timely
updates, to help us locate scarce supplies, and
have made sure that we qualified for financial
support during this crisis. In addition, they have
been able to quickly establish virtual platforms
that provided wonderful continuing education
and virtual meeting places. Our delegation was
not only able to meet in the virtual space but we
passed a resolution that brings greater diversity
to the Board of Trustees. Our associations give us
a collective voice that allows us to work together
to protect and advance our profession.
PCSO continues to work diligently to hear the
voices of our members so we can meet and anticipate their needs. Whether you practice in a small
town or a large city, whether you are just starting
your career or making plans to retire, or whether
you are a practice owner or an employee, we are
working for you. Over this past year, we have all

collaborated and innovated, and although these
changes were inspired from need, they have
nevertheless helped us to define the future. By
changing our annual session to an online platform, we were able to reach more members than
ever before. We are also working closely with our
graduate programs to understand the changing
needs of our newest members and to offer our
support during this important stage of their careers. With our components (state and provincial
organizations), we are providing programs to
support their leadership and advocacy efforts.
This is of vital importance to our profession, because orthodontics is only as strong as the laws of
our individual states and provinces. PCSO is also
striving to make sure we identify and remove any
obstacles that are present in orthodontics for the
growing number of women in our field.
As we look to the future, PCSO will continue to
remain nimble and address issues that are of
concern to you. I hope and pray that in this new
year, we will put the pandemic and the challenges of 2020 behind us, and I look forward to seeing
all of you in person very soon. We are planning to
have a wonderful " live " annual session in October
2021, and I am especially excited to show off my
home city of Portland, Oregon. This meeting will
provide each of you with the opportunity to enjoy
valuable comradery, innovative ideas, and a really
great time. For those of you who are unable to
travel, a " virtual option " will also be offered so
that everyone can benefit from this wonderful
meeting.
