Executive Update

PCSO Executive Director

Another year has come and gone. And while 2020
sure was different, it did not change the fact that
the PCSO stayed plenty busy working for all of
you. I am so thankful to be able to work with a
great leadership team year in and year out so that
the goals set forth by the PCSO for its members
can be accomplished. I want to take a moment to
commend your now immediate past-president,
Dr. Robert Meister, for the tremendous leadership
he showed during this most challenging year. He
never stopped envisioning a better way to serve
the PCSO membership.
The 84th Annual Session was most definitely
a meeting like none other in the history of the
PCSO. Although we worked hard to plan what
would have been an absolutely amazing meeting
at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, we worked
even harder to quickly transition the learning
experience to a virtual one. The PCSO partnered
with the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists
(RMSO), Midwestern Society of Orthodontists,
and Southwestern Society of Orthodontists to
provide an online meeting for more than 2,500
attendees, including 1,732 doctors, 735 team members, and 45 residents.
While we were not able to honor them in person,
the PCSO did acknowledge the following award
winners for 2020: Drs. David Kennedy (Award of
Merit), Ron Jawor (Annual Session Honoree), and
Michael Feinberg (PCSO Rising Stars Award). We
also implemented our first annual component
awards for innovation (to recognize ways that
components engage and bring value to their
members), recruitment (to recognize the component with the most new members), and membership retention (to recognize the component that
achieves the highest retention percentage for
the prior dues year). The Component Innovation
Award was given to California for their outreach/
recognition efforts of graduating residents.
The Component Membership Retention Award
was a tie between Nevada and Alaska for 100%
member retention in the 2019/2020 dues year.

was given to California for having the most new
members including new graduates, nonmembers,
and transfers.
Here are a few outcomes from the most recent
business and board meetings held virtually in
October 2020.

Wachtel (Arizona) were elected as president-elect and secretary-treasurer, respectively, and installed as officers alongside Dr. Marie
Lathrop (Oregon) as president.
Drs. Clarice Law (California), Mark Rashidi (California), R. Christian Solem (California), and
Rob Mintenko (Saskatchewan) were inducted
as new board members.
The board of directors elected Dr. Trista Felty
(British Columbia) as the new PCSO Trustee to
take office when confirmed by the AAO House
of Delegates in May 2021, taking over for Dr.
Norm Nagel as he ascends to the position of
AAO president-elect.
Drs. Courtney Dunn (Council on Communications), Jacqueline Bunce (Council on Membership, Ethics, & Judicial Concerns), Sneha
Oberoi (Council on Orthodontic Health Care),
John Griffiths (Council on Orthodontic Practice), James Mah (Council on Scientific Affairs),
and Michael Feinberg (AAO Political Action
Committee) were affirmed to continue their
work at the AAO.
Two new critical issues will be addressed by
task forces in the next year on the topics of
corporate practice issues and virtual learning/
webinars. Work will continue with our Resident Issues Critical Issues Task Force.
The board voted to rename the PCSO Lifetime
Achievement Award to the Arthur Dugoni
Lifetime Achievement Award.
A new Industry Advisory Council (representatives from top-level sponsors and regular
supporters of the PCSO) to be overseen by the
Continuing Education Committee was approved and will be implemented for the coming year to engage and provide feedback and
