tic assistant permit (OAP) course providers and
supplies the curriculum needed to train staff in
achieving their OAP, is getting a makeover! A task
force recently completed a thorough review of
course materials (originally authored in 2010) to
ensure the material remains accurate and relevant
and created an addendum that allows users to
expand an assistant's knowledge and understanding of newer concepts and technology now used
routinely in practice. The course materials are now
being put into a cohesive, user-friendly format.
The new package should be ready this summer.
We are looking forward to brighter days and a return to in-person gatherings! To that end, we are
planning to host a half-day continuing education
seminar on September 24, 2021. The Art & Science
of Orthodontics: Laser Gingival Contouring will
be presented by Dr. Stuart Frost at the Westin
Anaheim Resort. Online registration is available
on the CAO website at www.caortho.org.

Hawaii
The Hawaii Society of Orthodontists
(HSO) held its business meeting
virtually on October 15, 2020. The
HSO planned to host a live continuing education (CE) meeting sponsored by ORMCO
on March 4 with speaker Dr. Stuart Frost. Because
of state regulations on in-person gatherings and
scheduling complications, Dr. Frost has been postponed. We plan to hold a live CE event in September
2021 with American Orthodontics as the sponsor.
The HSO executive board has been working on
updating the HSO bylaws in 2021 to remain in
compliance with updated PCSO bylaws. We plan
to present the modified HSO bylaws to members
for approval at our annual business meeting,
scheduled on October 7, 2021.

Idaho
The Idaho State Orthodontic
Society (ISOS) has scheduled our
annual ISOS meeting to be held on
June 11 in Boise. Anil Idiculla has
agreed to be our speaker.
Our society came together to make the Idaho
State Dental Association (ISDA) aware of the
recent North Idaho meeting. The concluding
speaker's topic was on " airway-centric orthodontics. " Many of our members expressed
concern with several aspects of the meeting.
The speaker promotes himself as a Diplomate
of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy. He uses the Vivos system, but those who
are familiar with this academy and the Vivos
system know that it is not research based
nor is it promoted by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). The speaker is
an orthodontist, and the concern was that
those listening would conclude that what he
is teaching is what our specialty practices. We
felt that speakers for ISDA meetings should be
properly screened and that the content would
be research based. The ISDA proved to be very
helpful. The speaker was not removed, but the
following was agreed to:

some of the material to be changed.

ginning of the lecture stating that the material is not research based and is not supported
by the ISDA.
They moved to a three-part series on this subject. The next two parts will be in June. One
speaker will discuss research-based airway
material, and there will be another obstructive
sleep apnea lecture as well.
Following the airway lecture, ISOS was allowed to present a 30-minute research-based
lecture as a prequel to the material that will
be presented at the June meeting.
