from 1988 to 1991.
JN: Besides UCSF, tell us about your teaching
experiences elsewhere.
With travel and teaching, Mary Lou and Straty
have enjoyed many locations in the world
served on the Board of Directors and was honored
to be the chapter president in 1990. The Society is
a worldwide society with national meetings every
two years, dedicated to bringing together many
of the major contributors to share their orthodontic knowledge and comradery. I still recall my first
biennial meeting in Durango, Colorado, sitting
next to Dr. Sy Kloen of the Kloen HeadGear.
SR: I am an active instructor in the FACE [Foundation for Advanced Continuing Education] teaching group, an evolution of the Roth-Williams
philosophy. The international FACE group (Domingo Martin, San Sebastian Spain; Jorge Ayala,
Santiago, Chile; Doug Knight, Louisville, Kentucky;
Carl Roy, Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Paul Rigali,
Woodstock, Vermont) has been and continues to
be an essential source of new information for me
and the specialty. I have enjoyed working with
some of the leading-edge orthodontists in the
world. We teach university-trained orthodontists
throughout the world on the topics of occlusion,
jaw joint health, facial form and smile esthetics,
and airway with a goal-directed diagnosis and
interdisciplinary approach with other specialists.
I was honored in 2012 with the FACE group Pacesetter Award.
My first venture with this group was traveling and
teaching with Dr. Ron Roth. That was an adventure and an incredible learning experience. I was
able to meet and interact with many international
colleagues. It has been the most rewarding teach-
JN: How have you been involved in the Pacific
Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO)?
SR: In the early 1980s, I was very involved in the
PCSO as the central component program chairman, delegate to the AAO, and a speaker at many
annual PCSO and AAO meetings. I also am part
of the Editorial Board of the AJO-DO and have
regularly reviewed articles for the journal under
the last four editors. I have published more than
40 articles, including a series of papers titled " Orthodontic Dilemmas, " which were a regular part
of the PCSO Bulletin, and I contributed a chapter
