Executive Update

I do not think any of us could have predicted last
March that the course of our lives would be so
drastically changed over the course of a year. The
ad interim board meeting in March 2020 was
the last meeting that the PCSO had in person. I
think back to that time and how we were all just
waiting with bated breath for business and life as
usual to return. We wondered how long the pandemic would last. We hoped for a quick resolution
to it all. Now, by the time you read this, after
more than a year, I believe that a new " normal "
is emerging, and I am confident that life as we
knew it may look a bit different going forward.

I know we all crave face-to-face interaction with
our colleagues, and I hope that the light beginning to show at the end of the tunnel by way of
vaccinations continues to grow brighter. While I
have not been able to get mine yet, I look forward
to the day and anxiously await a bit of freedom
and will exhale with relief.

I speak with certainty in saying that the PCSO
has diligently worked throughout all of this as if
nothing had changed, and I am confident that we
will prevail! As always, we are here to serve you,
the PCSO membership, in any way we can.

Board Updates
The board met virtually on February 27 for its ad
interim meeting. Here are several of the items
achieved:

Bulletin editor-in-chief. Dr. Patrick Turley, California, was elected to take over the position
after the term of current Bulletin editor, Dr.
Jae Hyun Park, concludes in October.
The board interviewed two candidates for
the new and younger member (NYM) director-at-large. Dr. Nehi Ogbevoen, California,
was elected to take over the position after the
term of current NYM Director, Dr. Jose Castillo,
concludes in October.
An additional PCSO member was added to
the Continuing Education Committee: Dr. Bill

Dischinger. In addition, Drs. Stuart Frost and
John Graham will also join the committee,
replacing Drs. Anil Idiculla and Kelly Giannetti
after the 2021 fall meeting.
Policy changes were approved that included,
but are not limited to, a legal review of the
conflict of interest and electronic records
management policies. There were also
revisions made to PCSO committee structure,
dues waiver requirements, and spring continuing education.
The Continuing Education Committee will
begin looking at platforms that can provide
access to recorded meeting lectures in the
future as part of the meeting registration process in an effort to provide a hybrid meeting
experience.
The Membership & Communications
Committee plans to discuss how to survey
members in the coming months to learn how
we can support them coming out of the pandemic. The committee then wants to conduct
a full member needs assessment and organize
focus groups in 2022.
The Component Relations Committee is in the
process of assisting components with critical
governance updates, including bylaws and
policy or procedure revisions, through a series
of virtual leadership development sessions
with component leadership.
Several other task forces and committees
have been hard at work looking at resident
issues, webinars/virtual learning opportunities, social media and website updates, corporate practice issues, and needs of women
orthodontists. In addition, we have a task
force reviewing our current mission and core
values to ensure they remain current with our
goals, vision, and strategic plan as well as how
diversity, equity, and inclusion should play a
part in them.

This also served as our last board meeting with
Dr. Norm Nagel present as our PCSO trustee.
