In addition to legislator meetings, we have
signed on in support of a number of bills relevant
to members to further expand our legislative
engagement. We have also used more public
forums to educate policy makers and consumers
about appropriate uses of teledentistry and
where in-person visits are still needed. This

Education
We
are excited for the return to in-person gatherings.
In conjunction with our fall board meeting
this September, we are hosting a half-day educational
seminar: The Art & Science of Orthodontics-Laser
Gingival Contouring presented by
Dr. Stuart Frost. You can read more about it here

Member Support & Engagement
We know finding, training, and keeping great
staff continue to be among the biggest challenges
faced by CAO members. We have been working
on resources to assist members in addressing
those challenges. Our first resource is a list of
pro tips for finding great staff. You can check

The
review and redesign of the CAO orthodontic
assistant training program is now complete!
CAO's orthodontic assistant program launched in
2011 to expand the allowable range of duties for
registered dental assistants and dental assistants,
enabling orthodontists to train their own staff to
achieve an orthodontic assistant permit from the
Dental Board of California. Over the past year, the
program has undergone a comprehensive review
and a redesign of the materials to ensure the
program remains relevant and is user friendly, so
this resource is now better than ever for training
assistants! Learn more about the CAO program

Member engagement, particularly starting with
those in California residency programs, has been
a focus of the CAO for the past few years. Back
by popular demand this year is our graduate
spotlight, where we collect information from
graduating residents about their personal and
employment goals and share it with members in
an email that highlights and celebrates graduates.
We also continue to reach out to welcome
new members and touch base with existing
members at key points in their practice to remind
them of all CAO has to offer to support them in
their practice.

Hawaii
The Hawaii Society of Orthodontists
(HSO) is excited to host a
live continuing education (CE)
event on August 27, 2021. Dr.
Troy Christensen will lecture on " The Efficiencies
of Self-Ligation, " with support from American
Orthodontics. HSO is looking forward to our first
in-person event in more than a year, and we have
19 members planning to attend.
The HSO Executive Board continues to utilize the
PCSO leadership meetings as a guide to update
our component resources and bylaws. In 2021,
the Executive Board has updated the HSO bylaws,
strategic plan, and policy and procedure manual.
The modified HSO bylaws will be presented to
members for approval at our annual business
meeting, scheduled for October 7, 2021.
We encourage all HSO members to consider
joining the board or increasing their involvement
in our events. Please contact our president,
