Executive Director's Report
Executive Update
When I first wrote about the beginnings of the
COVID-19 pandemic more than a year ago, I certainly
did not think that it would still be a driving
force behind all our lives today. We have all had
to endure so many ups and downs, struggles, and
tumult. Now, it is beginning to look a bit brighter;
there appears to be an end in sight. I am hopeful
and optimistic.

While much of our everyday lives have seen chaos
at every turn, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists
(PCSO) has continued to successfully
navigate through these uncharted waters. The
PCSO committees, task forces, board, and delegation
have been hard at work over the past several
months, working on initiatives to create a more rewarding
association for the membership at large.
As was the case last year, the American Association
of Orthodontists (AAO) House of Delegates
(HOD), and subsequently annual session,
scheduled for Boston was held virtually. This
year, however, the virtual HOD consisted of a
much more robust agenda with more than 60
resolutions being considered, all three reference
committees conducted in a virtual format, caucuses,
a full HOD with online deliberations, and
voting. It was a great way to see the governance
work of the AAO continue to function, albeit in
a virtual HOD for the second year in a row. Your
PCSO delegation was led very successfully by Dr.
Paul Kasrovi. He worked diligently to collaborate
with other constituents and to keep the PCSO
delegates apprised of ongoing discussions. The
delegation welcomed Dr. Mary Hoffman as an
alternate delegate this year, provided valuable
input to the AAO, and represented the PCSO very

Committee and Task Force Updates
The Component Relations Committee has been
conducting regular leadership development
sessions for our component societies. These have
been centered on assisting with bylaws updates,
policy and procedure updates, strategic plan
creation, grassroots advocacy, and volunteerism.
The sessions have been received very positively
by the component leaders, and many bylaws and
policy updates are underway. As a result of these
sessions, we have also identified the need for the
PCSO to conduct a biannual orientation session
for new board members to assist in preparing
them for a good start to their leadership path.
The Governance Committee has revised the management
evaluation and board self-assessment
surveys. These are sent out in late summer to a
variety of members in key leadership positions.
The Continuing Education Committee (CEC) implemented
a new Virtual Learning/Webinars Subcommittee
that will serve as an ongoing source of
new learning ideas. They are currently working to
identify topics of interest to begin our content offerings
for members, including an update to our
financial literacy program and a potential panel
on the board exam process. The virtual offerings
also include individual or package purchases of
recorded lectures from the Western Orthodontic
Conference (WOCON) in the fall. The CEC has
been instrumental in the continued planning of
the 2021 WOCON in Portland, Oregon, October
22-24, that will feature the Ritz-Carlton Leadership
Center for an all-team workshop on Sunday
morning. The CEC is also beginning to plan for
the 2022 WOCON Spring Session in Las Vegas, Nevada,
March 4-5, that will feature the Ritz-Carlton
Leadership Center for a full-day team workshop,
and the 2022 WOCON in San Diego, California,
October 27-30. A call for speakers is currently out

fall meeting.
The Non-Dues Revenue (NDR) Committee is investigating
a variety of NDR opportunities that might
be viable options for the PCSO to pursue to raise
additional funds for the association.
The Resident Committee meets quarterly and consists
of a representative from every PCSO residency
program. The committee provides feedback on
