Memotain
An alternative lab-fabricated fixed retainer is
Memotain, which is a computer-aided design/
computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)
fabricated lingual retainer made of 0.016 ×
0.016-in nickel-titanium (NiTi) (Figure 4). Similar
to the BenderI, Memotain uses the STL file
to design a retainer for optimized placement
and superior fit around the interproximal and
lingual anatomy. However, rather than bending
a wire, this machine cuts a strip from a flat
sheet of NiTi, which decreases the chance of

Memotain offers advantages compared to other
systems as well. By being fabricated by CAD/
CAM, the design precisely adapts to the lingual
anatomy which makes it much more comfortable
for the patient. With it being made of NiTi, it is a
good option for minor misalignment correction
by designing the retainer to the ideal position.
Disadvantages include a lab fee around $162
and a long turn around period. It takes 10-days
to be fabricated and shipped, but with that, it
has a 24-month warranty. Also, to minimize any
premature bonding failures due to poor bonding
technique, it comes with detailed bonding
instructions and a transfer jig.
As technology advances, the options for fixed
lingual retainers are increasing. These fixed
retainers range from in-house (made by hand or
machine) to lab-fabricated retainers and come
in different materials and wire thicknesses. Each
has their own advantages and disadvantages, so
it is important to consider which is the the most
functional and cost-effective for your practice.
