Living in an evidence-based era, it is interesting that some
of the appliances and techniques we routinely use have
low evidence of their efficacies, despite being used even
in academic settings. Examples of this may be the debate
over self-ligating versus traditional fixed appliances, the use
of mini-screw-supported functional appliances, among
others.20-23
Similarly, there is only one randomized clinical
trial regarding the efficacy of LIPUS in accelerating orthodontic
tooth movement,7
which is insufficient for conducting
a meta-analysis to draw more robust conclusions on
the applicability of this technique. Another 10-20 years is
likely needed to collect enough studies to perform such a
meta-analysis. Currently, LIPUS is available for commercial
use in Canada, European Union countries, and Australia as
the Aevo System through SmileSonica, Inc. (Edmonton, AB,
Canada). Although there is an introductory scientific basis for
the efficacy of LIPUS on bone remodeling and dental tissue
stimulation and formation, additional studies are needed.23
