Written Examination Update
The 2022 ABO Written Examination was administered
to 412 examinees on April 5, 2022, at Pearson
Vue testing centers in the United States and Canada,
with a 90% pass rate. The ABO Written Examination
is a comprehensive exam that assesses the
examinee's knowledge of basic sciences and clinical
concepts based on criterion-referenced testing.
The examination comprises 240 multiple-choice
questions on subject areas outlined by CODA
and is divided into four modules. Requirements,
eligibility and examination resources, and the most
current reading list are all located on the ABO
website (https://www.americanboardortho.com/
orthodontists/become-certified/written-exam/).
Once the examination is successfully completed,
the results do not expire.
Educational Update
□ The ABO conducted a Written Standards Meeting
in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 27-29, 2022. Attendees
participated in a benchmarking exercise for
the examination.
□ The ABO conducted a July 2021 Item Writing
Session in St. Louis where educators, examiners,
ABO directors, and emeriti reviewed patient cases
and developed questions with answers for use in
future Scenario-based Clinical Examinations.
□ The ABO's campaign, " It Takes a Specialist, " focuses
on the importance of using an orthodontic
specialist; it continues to develop with additional
online digital components that showcase a
variety of tools that help members emphasize
the importance of our specialty. The video has
met with a favorable response and is available
for use by board-certified orthodontists in their
offices and on social media channels. You can

□ The ABO continues to update online Educational
Toolkit resources for board-certified orthodontists.
Items include brochures, suggested website
copy, patient and team materials, videos, window
clings, a Brand Standards Guide, and pathway
graphics. Each doctor has access to their
own personalized online dashboard, which allows
multiple office listings on the public online
orthodontist locator, user-specific notifications,
tracking of personal continuing education credit
hours, and the ability to print a complimentary
verification letter.
□ The ABO's website has been upgraded with benefits
including improved functionality and overall
enhanced user experience with easier access to
online tools.
□ The ABO's Facebook page has moved.

□ The ABO has again requested an unmanned
tabletop display for board certification materials
at the individual constituency Annual Session
meetings.
□ Complimentary ABO measuring gauges for new
residents will be provided to requesting CODA-accredited
orthodontic programs.
□ The ABO Educators Symposium, " The Change Is
Here-Are You on Board? " honoring Dr. Katherine
Vig, was held on Saturday, October 30, 2021, in St.
Louis, Missouri. Orthodontic program department
chairs, program directors, and ABO-appointed advocates,
along with AAO trustees, College of Diplomates
of the American Board of Orthodontics
(CDABO) council, and ABO emeriti were invited to
participate. A virtual component was available to
those unable to attend.
□ The ABO Advocacy Program continues to be
successful, with an ABO-appointed advocate
volunteer assigned to each CODA-accredited
orthodontic program in the United States and
Canada. The program will be evaluated to ensure
content and communications continue to meet
the specific needs of the schools.
