□ Lack of Support for Schedule Changes to the
HOD Meeting: The proposal to have a hybrid
approach of virtual and in-person to our HOD
meetings faced a lot of opposition and was not
adopted. The current model is certainly not flawless,
but in the absence of a better alternative, we
will continue as is, with all aspects of the HOD to
be conducted in person.
□ Special Committee on Constituent Collaboration:
The work of the Merger/Reorganization
Task Force continues with the establishment of
this special committee. With representatives from
every constituent, the main goals of this special
committee will be to consider opportunities for
standardization across constituents, to initiate
partnerships, share ideas, discuss merger possibilities,
and develop a leadership pipeline. This
special committee will sunset in three years unless
its progress and momentum will necessitate
reinstatement by a future HOD vote.
□ Strategic Plan 2023-2027 and the Revised
Strategy Map: The key point here was the adoption
of a new strategy map for the AAO to reimagine
our governance structure. We will no longer
be bound by dogma and regimented principles
that guided us in the past. Many " out-of-the-box "
ideas have been proposed in recent years past,
and the new trend to push the envelope will
continue. The sky is the limit when it comes to
the future of our specialty. The new strategy map
reminds us of this and reinforces our mission.
□ AAO Meeting Revenue Share: The newly formed
committee for the AAO Meeting Planning (CCon)
will investigate the creation of meeting revenue-sharing
models for all AAO constituent societies
when a Winter Conference or Annual Session
is held in that constituent's territory. As you can
imagine, PCSO is most affected by this because
our territory offers more attractive destinations for
meeting attendance, and if more and more AAO
meetings take place in our neck of the woods,
our WOCON annual sessions may be negatively
impacted in terms of attendance in the future.
□ Component Membership Assignment for
Student and Service Members: The goal is for
AAO to assign all student members and all service
members to a component based on residency
program and address on file, respectively. This
will facilitate early inclusion and engagement for
these highly important groups.
□ Consumer Aware Program (CAP) Budget: The
FY22-23 CAP budget of $5 million will be funded
by a $500 per member assessment for all US
and Canadian active members (active academic
members excluded) with the balance drawn from
excess liquid reserves. This assessment amount
for FY23-24, 24-25, and 25-26 will be $600 per
member.
□ Budget Preparation and Adoption: Three resolutions
related to possible acceptance and mechanics
of approval for a potential " deficit " budget
were adopted after much debate. Clarification
from the Budget and Finance Committee was
critical for a better understanding of the presented
resolutions. In the past, the Board of Trustees
was required to present a balanced budget
before the house, which at times did not reflect
the true financial realities of a given year. The pandemic
years have shown us all how the financial
well-being of individuals and organizations can
practically change overnight. We would want our
association to tell us " how it really is " as opposed
to fudging numbers to paint an optimistic yet
unrealistic picture. These budget resolutions will
help the Board of Trustees present an accurate
budget that may be balanced or unbalanced. If
there is a budget deficit, recommendations will
be made by the Budget and Finance Committee
regarding how to arrive at a balanced budget
through various mechanisms, including raising
dues, tapping into excess liquid reserves, or
cutting certain programs and expenditures. The
ultimate decision of how to proceed is still in the
hands of the House. Approving the budget and
dues comprises the last two resolutions voted by
the HOD. This authority will be never taken from
the voting delegates.
