been a proponent of " incrementalism. " That is, in all
that you do, leave things a little bit better than they
were before you were there. After I was elected by the
PCSO Board of Directors to serve on the AAO Board of
Trustees and had the opportunity to see how all the
other societies functioned, I am proud of the level of
organization, leadership, commitment, and forward
thinking of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists.
I could be accused of bias, but it is the best society in
the AAO!
As with many of the health sciences, orthodontics
has many internal and external influences that could
adversely affect our wonderful profession. It is at the
society level that we must continue to be vigilant, and
I am thankful for the opportunity the PCSO afforded
me in my career to play a part in advancing and
protecting our profession. I am well aware that I have
gained far more than I have given while on my PCSO
journey.
Personally, I could not have succeeded without the
support of my wonderful wife, Jacquetta, who put up
with the hours of phone calls, faxes, and emails and
the many orthodontic meetings she attended with
me. We have met so many wonderful people, all over
the United States, who have become lifelong friends.
I had the pleasure of receiving guidance from many
mentors along the way, and I will always be especially
thankful for Dr. Terry McDonald for being an example
of leadership and encouraging me to continue to
take on additional responsibilities that I would not
likely have done on my own. There are so many of
my PCSO friends that I recall serving with along the
way, and I am incredibly grateful and honored to have
been allowed to serve the PCSO with them. I truly
have wonderful memories! We always stand on the
shoulders of those who went before us.
It is with great appreciation that I thank you, PCSO, for
this Arthur A. Dugoni Lifetime Achievement Award.
2022 PCSO Award of Merit Honoree
The PCSO Award of Merit was established in 1987
to recognize and honor a PCSO member who is an
orthodontist or paraprofessional within the geographic
boundaries of the PCSO and who has made
a significant contribution to the orthodontic specialty
over a number of years.
The 2022 PCSO Award of Merit is being awarded
to Dr. Ron Wolk. Few individuals have devoted so
much time to serving the specialty of orthodontics
as Dr. Wolk, and the PCSO would like to highlight his
achievements.
Dr. Ronald P. Wolk
Calgary, British Columbia
Dr. Wolk grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,
and attended the University of Manitoba for his
dental training. Following a year of general practice,
Ron pursued graduate orthodontic training at
the University of Minnesota, where he received a
master's degree in anatomy. He began orthodontic
practice with his partner, Dr. Barry Hoffman,
in Calgary, Alberta. Almost immediately, Dr. Wolk
began serving the Alberta Society of Orthodontists,
becoming president in 1985. He also concurrently
served the Western Canadian Society of Orthodontists,
serving as its president in 1985. Those experiences
led to his involvement with the Canadian
Association of Orthodontists, where he was co-chair
of the Annual Scientific Session (1992), editor of the
Directory (1992-1999), Board of Directors (19922004),
and finally president (1999-2000). Dr. Wolk
served as president of the Canadian Foundation
for the Advancement of Orthodontics (2001-2003).
He was elected to the PCSO Board of Directors in
1998 where he served until 2002. He was on the
Executive Committee (2005-2006) and then served
as PCSO president from 2007-2008. He was twice
co-chair of the Staff Annual Scientific Session in
2011-2017.
He has served as a PCSO delegate to the AAO House
of Delegates and was honored to be chair of the delegation
for six years. In addition to Dr. Wolk's service to
PCSO, he also participated in numerous AAO activities,
including the AAO Task Force on Volunteerism; Task
