With regard to race/ethnic considerations, in 2020,
61.6% of the United States population identified as
non-Hispanic White. However, by the year 2065, it is
expected that the non-Hispanic White category will
no longer be a majority and will represent 46% of
the US population. Historical data demonstrate that
in 1960, 5.4% of the US population was composed
of immigrants and their US-born children. In 2020,
this number steadily increased to 26.0% immigrants
and their US-born children, with an estimate of
nearly 36% by the year 2065. For the Hispanic/
Latinx community, the population was estimated
to grow from the current 18% to a future 24%, and
the growth of the African American community is
expected to be from its current 12% to an estimated
14%. The Asian population will experience a slightly
greater increase, from 6% to 14%. To summarize
AAO's membership representation, the percentage
of Asian, African American, " more than one race, " and
" other " orthodontists seem to be increasing in the
younger age brackets. Simultaneously, the percentage
of respondents who identify as White has been
decreasing. The percentage of American Indian or
Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific
Islander, have remained stagnant (see Table 2).
Statistically, women have been underrepresented in
orthodontics and health care professions, but that
trend is slowly changing, as evident above. Not only
is the representation of women improving over
time, but female orthodontic residents are now the
majority representation throughout our US-based
orthodontic residency programs. Unfortunately, this
same transformation does not hold for the various
ethnic groups. Despite positive improvements in
the demographics of the orthodontic workforce, it
is not an accurate, commensurate representation of
the population of the United States.
Orthodontists are well geared to treat a wide variety
of patients from a plethora of backgrounds, which
is only further ameliorated by having a diverse
staff. Nonetheless, certain patients may still prefer
being treated by a provider with a similar culture or
background. In addition, some patients may not feel
comfortable being treated due to their age. Each
practice must highlight and showcase its broad patient
population in the hopes of putting new patient
families at ease for treatment and acceptance.
Dental schools are well underway in improving
cultural competency standards as the US population
trends toward a slightly older mean age
with more ethnic diversity. By extrapolating
this information, orthodontists can set up their
practices for increased success to target a larger
patient population than they had in the past. With
aspirations of oral health care being accessible to
all, orthodontists can provide affordable solutions
to fit the needs of their patients.
