Texas Mathematics Teacher Fall/Winter 2020 - 4

Letter from the President
Greetings, TCTM members!
As we progress through 2020, I want to
let you know that the board of TCTM
is continuing our work to support the
mathematics education of students in
Texas. In these difficult and confusing
times, we are all trying to find ways
to help students learn well in the
varying settings in which schools find
themselves. Like many of you, the
board met virtually in July to continue the business at hand.
Deciding how to deal with financial changes resulting from
the cancellation of CAMT as a face-to-face conference was a
major focus of the meeting. Please continue your membership
through our new website.
I do have a few items that I would like to point out to you, our
membership.
*	CAMT is being offered as a virtual conference at a
minimum cost to you.
*	NCTM has multiple virtual professional development
offerings as well.
*	TCTM has a new website that has been designed to make
it easier for you to find information you need.
*	You can establish your membership and pay online. If you
need to change your address, you can do that on the new
website as well.
*	Grant applications are due Dec 31, 2020. Members can
apply for up to $800. Please see the website for details and
application.
*	Members can nominate a college student for a $1000
scholarship in the spring. Details are on the website.
*	Please note that board members have new email
addresses which are given on the website and here in the
journal. Please contact us with questions or information.
*	Remember that there are archived copies of the Texas
Mathematics Teacher available to all teachers through
the TCTM website. They are a great source of strong
mathematical activities and information.
On a more personal note, this is my last message to you
as president. My term ends in January 2021. It has been an
unimaginable honor to lead the TCTM board. I want to share
something with you. I have had many opportunities through
the years to have contact with teachers from other parts of
the country and you might be surprised how often I have
been told that math educators from around the U.S. look to
Texas for leadership in curriculum development. Our state
curriculum (TEKS) is often used as a guide for sequencing
and teaching content in ways that can reach all students. It
has always made me proud to have the tools we have and to
recognize the amount of work that is done in the background
to help us all do our best work for students. We are very
lucky.

As we continue trying to reinvent ourselves as teachers,
we all must remember who we work for . . . we work for
the students we teach.
Thank you for the opportunity to be president of such an
unbelievable group of educators. I look forward to the
leadership of president-elect Jennifer Hylemon.
She is terrific!

TCTM Leader Spotlight
Each year since 1995, TCTM has accepted nominations for
two awards for leaders in our professional community.
The TCTM Leadership Award is presented to a TCTM
member who is nominated by a TCTM affiliate. The second
award, the E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award, is
presented to someone nominated by a TCTM member.
The following individuals have been honored and we wish
to acknowledge their former and ongoing contributions
this year in the leader spotlight. If you wish to nominate
someone for 2021, please download the forms from our
website. Please submit your nomination by Dec. 31, 2020.
The award recipients for 2021 will be recognized at the
TCTM business meeting at CAMT 2021. See the program
for time and place of the meeting.
