Texas Mathematics Teacher Fall/Winter 2022 - 4

Letter from the President
Dear Texas Mathematics Teachers,
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus noted
that change is the only constant. As
mathematics teachers, this reads like
an oxymoron, but as humans, we know
it to be true. Whatever any of us have
experienced from last school year to this
new 2022-2023 school year, all of us are
going through change at different rates.
Perhaps you changed classrooms or
moved to a different grade level, school, or district. Maybe it
is that everything else is the same but the students you teach
are different students than last year. Change is inevitable,
and we are experiencing it together this school year as new
STAAR item types become live for testing in Spring 2023, our
mathematics TEKS undergo the review process that marks
the beginning of a multi-year process that will result in new
standards and instructional materials, and there are changes
that are sure to come with the legislative session that will
begin in January 2023.
The Texas Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (TCTM) strives to support you
during every school year. Here are just a few
of the ways we will continue to support our
members through changes in 2022-2023
and beyond:
* Could you use up to $800 to improve your math
classroom or math teaching, help your school achieve
its math goals, or improve mathematics teaching and
learning? Apply for a TCTM Grant! Applicants must
be a member of TCTM. The deadline for submission is
December 31.
* Did you attend CAMT in July to renew your
membership? If not, fill out the membership application/
renewal form on our website. Make sure you are receiving
email communications from TCTM in the form of our
monthly newsletters and notifications of new video
postings to our YouTube channel, designed to support
Texas mathematics teachers in the transition to online
testing, including support for the new item types that will
be live for Spring 2023 administrations of STAAR/EOC
assessments. If you are not receiving our emails, please
reach out to tctmpresident@gmail.com so that we can
investigate why and work with you to resolve the issue.
* Have you visited the TCTM website recently? Make
sure to read our Government Relations Blog. There is
so much information there about our last few legislative
sessions and State Board of Education (SBOE) meetings!
The blog will continue to be updated during the
upcoming 88th regular legislative session.
It is our sincere hope that the support TCTM is able to offer
you as a Texas mathematics teacher helps you navigate any
changes this school year brings. In this issue of the journal,
you will find support in the form of ready-made activities for
your classroom instruction, articles to increase your learning,
and information to grow your professional learning network
through local, state, and national organizations.

The journal is published twice annually through the hard
work of many people, who for the past several years
have been led by Dr. Dusty Jones at Sam Houston State
University. Our editorial team is changing prior to the
release of the Spring/Summer 2023 issue. Please join me
in thanking Dr. Jones for the fantastic job he has done
leading this effort!
With heartfelt thanks for your consistency in
times of change,
Jennifer Hylemon, M.S.

TCTM Leader Spotlight
Each year since 1995, TCTM has accepted nominations for
two awards for leaders in our professional community. The
TCTM Nancy Trapp Leadership Award is presented to a
TCTM member who is nominated by a TCTM affiliate. The
second award, the E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award,
is presented to someone nominated by a TCTM member.
The following individuals have been honored and we wish
to acknowledge their former and ongoing contributions
this year in the leader spotlight. If you wish to nominate
someone for 2023, please download the forms from our
website. Please submit your nomination by Dec. 31, 2022.
The award recipients for 2023 will be recognized at the
TCTM business meeting at CAMT 2023. See the program
for time and place of the meeting.
