Sudoku for All Levels
Early elementary students can do Sudoku also, which will
help them develop problem-solving skills and pattern
recognition. Numbers, shapes, or letters can be used.
To create a sudoku, you can start with a 4 x 4 square,
using the letters A, B, C and D so that each row, column,
and diagonal show each letter exactly once. Once you
have this set up, remove some of the letters to create a
puzzle.
Here's a 4 x 4 sudoku with missing letters. You could also
modify this problem so that you can only have different
letters in each 2 x 2 square (using the corners) as well as in
each row, column, and diagonal.

Crossword Symmetry
Often, the grid for a crossword puzzle has symmetry. The
grid may have one or more lines of reflection symmetry,
and the grid may have rotation symmetry.
Complete the grid by creating black squares so that the
grid has symmetry. See if you can make a grid with
only reflection symmetry, another with only rotation
symmetry, and another with both reflection and rotation
symmetry.
You can use patty paper to check your answers. A nextlevel
challenge would be to find words that fit in your
grids!

Here's a 5 x 5 sudoku that uses the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5.

In a magic square, the sum of the numbers in each
horizontal row is the same, and this sum is also the same
for the numbers in each vertical column, and the numbers
in both diagonals connecting opposite corners. The magic
square below uses the first 16 positive multiples of 2 (2, 4,
6, and so on, up to 32). Fill in the missing squares to make
all sums for rows, columns, and diagonals the same. Use
each multiple of 2 exactly once.
