Happy New Year! We welcome 2021 with the hope for good health, healing, and
the return to better days in the workplace. Hats off to the nutrition and foodservice
professionals who have served as frontline workers throughout the pandemic,
facing health risks, logging overtime, and being creative thinkers to keep
vulnerable clients nourished and safe. We appreciate you!
In this issue of Edge, we explore workforce development. This is a broad topic, and we've got
articles addressing various facets of it. As I was reviewing our feature articles, certain words kept
popping up repeatedly-words like teamwork, training, and motivation. The common thread
throughout is that department success is built on a foundation comprised of these key concepts.
Sure, there are countless important attributes of an effective employee and team, but most begin
with these at the core.
Teamwork involves members of the nutrition care team and other disciplines working together to
implement quality patient care. Positive health outcomes are based on this group approach. See
page 16 to learn more about each participant on the nutrition team.
Training is a key predictor of success. Employees who don't have thorough training generally
don't perform well. Whether it's new-hire orientation or subsequent in-service sessions, learning
is required to improve productivity, promote safety, and enhance employee relationships. The
pandemic has changed the face of training in many facilities. In some operations, hands-on
training has shifted to virtual education. As with any training format, understanding your learners
is important for delivering meaningful information that resonates with each participant. Our page
34 feature outlines the steps required to create optimal virtual training programs.
Motivation is crucial in your workforce. A lack of it can wreak havoc on your department and
chip away at overall employee morale. Learn how to engage staff members and energize your
workplace. Tips for maximizing drive are presented on page 10.
Other features in this issue focus on staff recruitment, emergency readiness, and practicing
mindfulness. All are excellent reads and can help you create an effective and dynamic work
environment.
