to a lack of exposure for our field. He saw a need to shine
a spotlight on the " many leaders in the profession, not just
deans or other leaders in organizations such as the American
Association of the Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, but the
unsung heroes of the profession such as residency directors
and doctors that are on the frontlines training the next
generations of podiatrists. " As students, we do not have great
exposure to leaders in the profession outside of our local
school network until we embark on clerkships during our
fourth year, and even then, we may be limited to whichever
clerkships we decide to visit. Throughout this experience,
there are many names of great podiatrists we have heard
of but haven't had the opportunity to hear from them, and
I think this platform is an excellent way to hear from many
great voices in our field.
I find that the guests featured on the podcast typically
have very similar beginnings into podiatry, usually an early
shadowing experience enables them to fall in love with the
profession. But that is where the parallels of their journeys
end. There are many great stories from doctors such as
Dr. Lee Rogers, discussing his foray into movie production
while working in southern California. Dr. Andrew Cohen
discusses the founding of the Central Michigan University
residency program in Saginaw, MI and what he looks for
in a great student on clerkships. The podcast also features
episodes with current third-year students as they prepare for
their clerkship experience, as well as graduating residents
as they prepare for their lives in full practice. Among these,
there are many excellent snippets of advice as well as the
painting of a picture of the many different paths that one
can take to become successful in podiatry.
If you are looking to hear from some of the
great voices in our field or simply to gain
some insight into the paths they have taken,
then don't miss out on Dean's Chat: All Things
Podiatric Medicine with Dr. Jeffrey Jensen.
New episodes are released weekly and can be
found on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or
wherever you get your content.
