APMA House of Delegates
2022 Summary

On March 12-13, the American
Podiatric Medical Association held
its House of Delegates conference
in Washington, DC. The House of
Delegates (HOD) is the legislative
and governing body of APMA
composed of certified delegates
and alternates from each state
component society. The HOD meets
once a year to hold elections and
make decisions for APMA. This
conference allows APMA members
and podiatric medical student
leaders from across the nation
to come together to assist with
decisions regarding important issues
for the profession. Seven APMSA
delegates were in attendance during
the HOD, three of which participated
directly with elections.
The two-day conference began with
a welcome address and opening
remarks from Board members prior
to the HOD business sessions. Our
APMSA President, Mr. Nhan Tran,
was invited to address the House
regarding the current state of
APMSA. Specifically, he discussed
2021 being the year of change to
the association, transitioning to
be easily accessible to the student
body of all nine colleges with the
development of a new website and

hosting educational webinars and
workshops.
After Mr. Tran's speech, the
House began the items of business
including policy proposals regarding
participation in health care reform,
recognition of physician parity,
and prioritization of mental health.
Courtesy Resolutions involved the
Distinguished Service Citation to
Dr. Jerauld D. Ferritto JR, DPM
and the recognition of the 50th
anniversary of the foot and ankle
health section of the American
Public Health Association. The
House voted on proposed edits to
APMA Bylaws, House of Delegates
operations Manual, and the Code
of Conduct document.
Aside from the policy changes
during the meeting, several awards
were distributed in recognition of
outstanding work. A special one
being the Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM,
Leadership Award presented to Ms.
Marit Sivertson for her leadership
as executive director of four state
component organizations and the
American Podiatric Medical Students
Association. The day concluded with
the installment of Dr. Laura Pickard,
DPM as the second female APMA
president.
The second day of the conference
started with caucuses and candidate
forums as board elections were later
in the day. Reports were presented
during the HOD regarding Student
Recruitment, the Diversity Equity
and Inclusion task force, the APMA
Political Action Committee, and
Legislative Advocacy. Any previously
tabled items from the day before
were resumed and concluded
during the HOD business session.
Afterwards, elections were held
where three APMSA delegates
participated in the process. The
results determined Dr. Sylvia
Virbulis, DPM was elected president
elect, Dr. Lawrence Santi, DPM
was elected as treasurer, Dr. Jane
Anderson, DPM was newly elected
to the APMA Board of Trustees,
Dr. Leslie Campbell, DPM and
Dr. William Long, DPM were reelected
as APMA Board of Trustees,
Dr. Rebecca Sundling, DPM was
re-elected as the young physician
member of the Board, Dr. Kevan
Kreitman, DPM was re-elected as
speaker of the House, and Dr. Tyson
Green,DPM was elected liaison to
the JCRSB. Following the election
installments, the House adjourned
until 2023.
