MSE retaining walls enhance stability and
promote longevity of new boulevard extension
leading to New Jersey Fossil Park

pring 2024 brought with it the grand opening of a oneof-a
kind fossil park and museum in Gloucester County,
N.J. Part of Rowan University in South Jersey, the new Jean
and Ric Edelman Fossil Park and Museum includes 44,000
square feet of exhibit space above a former marl quarry,
featuring a world-class museum and active fossil dig site.
With the highly anticipated museum, Gloucester County
invested in a variety of infrastructure enhancements to
improve access to the museum, including the extension of
Mantua Boulevard.
To provide site accessibility and safely accommodate the
increase in visitor traffic, the scope of work included the
extension of the roadway and construction of a Mechanical
Stabilized Earth (MSE) system to elevate the roadway
through existing low-lying areas. Gloucester County's team
for the design and construction of the MSE walls, New
Jersey-based Richard E. Pierson Construction Co., Inc.,
partnered with Stantec, Earth Engineering Incorporated
and Access Limited Construction, a leading provider of
earth retention, ground improvement, rockfall mitigation
and steep slope services.
