Retaining wall construction
To establish profile of the new Mantua
Boulevard Extension, 900 linear feet
(274.3 m) of MSE walls were constructed.
Based on the existing grades, the north
and south faces of the MSE wall were
not symmetric. The northern face of the
embankment was roughly 12,600 square
feet (1170.5 square meters) with a maximum
height of approximately 37.5 feet
(11.4 m) and an approximate length of
970 feet (295.7 m). The southern face of
the embankment was 4,300 square feet
(399.4 square meters) with a maximum
height of 27 feet (8.2 m) and an approximate
length of 615 feet (187.5 m).
In coordination with Pierson, Access
Limited crews installed the soil nails
from the topside of the embankment
during the placement of the reinforced
fill. Additionally, no more than 13 feet
(4 m) of fill was placed before the installation
of soil nails in any given area,
providing a safe and efficient soil nail
installation. In total, 813 galvanized
hollow-bar soil nails were installed into
walls 1 and 2. Hollow-bar soil nails,
measuring up to 15 feet (4.6 m) long,
were chosen due to their high installation
rates and high pullout and bond
capacities. Throughout construction,
seven verification tests and 41 proof
tests were completed to verify soil conditions
and as part of the joint quality
management program Pierson and
Access Limited implemented.
The combination of
the geosynthetically
reinforced soil structure
with a soil nail and
shotcrete supported
face would ensure the
performance of the
walls while managing
the risks of building
over unfavorable soil.
