TWEED LAGOON
TORONTO
The Municipality of Tweed is located approximately 220 kilometers (136.7 miles) northeast of Toronto.
The municipality has a population of approximately 6,057 and 2,512 homes. In 2019, they found that
the existing wastewater treatment system was nearing its rated capacity. To meet the future demands
of a growing community, the municipality needed to expand the wastewater system, which included
construction of a third lagoon cell. The project received both federal and provincial funding, including
an investment through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan.
THE SOLUTION
Site preparation began in Spring 2021, and approximately
60,000 cubic meters (2.1 million cubic feet) of soil was moved
to construct the third cell and prepare for the liner system.
The liner system was installed as a " sandwich " consisting of a
heavy weight nonwoven geotextile on the top and bottom, and
1 mm (40-mil) polyethylene geomembrane in the middle.
Using high quality LLDPE resin, Solmax created an additive
package with enhanced endurance properties, excellent UV and
chemical resistance that met the engineer and site requirements.
To supply a protection barrier for the geomembrane,
62,000 square meters of Mirafi®
1160N nonwoven, manufactured
by TenCate Geosynthetics, were installed.
To minimize handling and increase installation efficiency, the
nonwoven geotextile rolls were factory-sewn with double stitched
prayer seams to double-width rolls prior to installation. This also
helped to minimize waste. The polyethylene geomembrane liner
panels were welded together using a wedge welder, and pipe
penetrations were sealed using an extrusion-welding process.
PERFORMANCE
It is estimated that the sewage system's capacity was expanded
by around 50%, which will serve approximately 400 new homes.
