Brian Richardson: " I'm having more
fun in the last five years than I did in
the first 42. The job is getting easier
than it was back in the old days. We
have a great young team here, and
it's wonderful to see how they are
taking the business to a new level. "
Kathy Schaefer, IFM: " I have stayed
in the industry because I enjoy the
diversity of it, working with people
and crew, and the beloved guys in the
tent division and IFAI [now ATA]. "
Chad Struthers: " I enjoy the
variety, helping to solve problems
and creating unique events. "
Do you see yourself retiring
in the near future?
John Creedon Sr.: " I keep telling my
troops I only need 10 more years. My
two kids tell me I have been saying
that for at least 15 years. So maybe
I am getting closer. I am practicing
taking time off in the winter. "
Jane Case Frost: " I see myself taking
fewer events, but not retiring too soon.
Like I said, it gets in your blood. "
Mike Holland: " Defining 'near future'
is difficult. There are aspects of the
day-to-day that begin to weigh on
you, but then again, just as quickly,
they can invigorate you when there
is a challenge. This industry gets in
your blood and it's difficult to let go.
The feeling you get from successful
work and the many close friends I
have made in this industry would be
difficult to just walk away from. "
Brian Kordek: " Not in the near
future. There are new opportunities
I'm looking forward to exploring
and I still love what I do. "
Heinz Röder: " Why should I? I like
very much what I am doing. "
Kathy Schaefer, IFM: " I am 66, and
cannot really retire. We still do so
many events and there is no one
behind me to take over, so I will stay.
Up until recently I could still do the
physical activity. Now, not so much. "
What's the biggest change
you've seen in the industry
and how did you adapt?
Carol Lee Cundey: " Safety and
modernization. I remember when I
started, people would go out in flip flops
and cut-off shorts smoking a cigarette
and putting up a big tent. They didn't
measure things out. We didn't have
hard hats and steel-toed boots and
hearing protection. If you go out now
and look at jobsites, you're seeing PPE.
You never saw a safety vest 25 years
ago. We as manufacturers have been
working with associations to promote
that, and to see it put in use as a common
business practice is just fantastic. "
Jane Frost: " The more advanced tent
technology. Starting with pole tents to
structures with glass walls has given the
industry so much more to work with. "
Steve Frost: " The inability to find
good, responsible installers that want
to do the work and put in the time to
become foremen and supervisors.
Today's generation wants to sit behind
a computer. We're still adapting,
but it's our biggest challenge. "
Mike Holland: " The transition from
canvas to vinyl tents. We manufacture
our tops, so we had to switch from
sewing tents to welding vinyl, but
now could wash them to achieve a
longer life on the fabric. Clearspan
structures were added to our inventory
in 1985, and we haven't looked
back. Using ratchet straps for tent
