CASE STUDY
HOW ANCHOR INDUSTRIES EMBRACES THE MULTIGENERATIONAL WORKPLACE
rom a manufacturing perspective, Steve Belliveau,
sales manager at Anchor Industries Inc., believes the
challenge in the industry, and particularly in a medium/
large fabrication facility such as Anchor, is to have younger
employees become positively ingrained into company
culture from the outset.
F
" Orientation starts with our mission statement and our
customer-driven philosophy, " Belliveau explains. " How
our products are used and how they serve as solutions to
our customers' needs seems to really be important to this
employee group. Connecting the dots is critical and keeping
[them] involved in helping with solutions is paramount. "
He also understands that new, younger employees
often seek more flexibility in hours and aren't necessarily
looking for overtime like previous employees. " Time off is
very important to them, especially if they have younger
families, " he says, " and this can definitely be an issue
since our manufacturing is seasonal. "
As the older generation retires, Belliveau speaks of
how important it is that " we absorb all this information
from these older folks before they leave, because the
industry really has changed. It's been kind of a master
craftsman industry in both the rental business and
manufacturing, and that is beginning to leave us at a
much faster pace, as those who have been doing this for
30 or 40 years are turning it over to the next generation. "
He also believes that the younger people in the
industry-be they children of former owners, those buying
out their bosses or those straight out of college-should
rethink the business from a more modern perspective.
" With new technology, the time frame to get things done
is getting shorter, " he notes. " People my age (in their 50s
and older), haven't used the new technology. We're still
somewhat old school, and if we don't get up to speed,
we're pretty much left in the dust. To be profitable, we have
to be that much more efficient from a manufacturing and a
tech rental standpoint. "
It's far too easy, says Belliveau, to lose younger people
to big companies like Nissan and Toyota who pay better
wages and have more flexibility in their schedules. That's
where bringing together the younger generations-with
their ability to solve problems far more quickly-with the
older workers who have the industry experience, comes
into play, he says.
" You have the best of both worlds. You have the
concept of communicating and using technology to be
more efficient, but you have some of the experience and
values of the past. " Part of Anchor's ability to do this is
via its new English language program, which includes
reaching out to the Latino/Hispanic workforce. " Most
are younger, " says Belliveau, " but they work well with
the older managers and other employees if treated with
respect and if reasonable expectations are given. " The
company also makes sure all new hires feel like a part of
the company.
" Before we start training new employees on a sewing
machine or a welder or grommets, we talk to them about
the culture of the company, how we do things, what our
philosophy is, and more importantly, the products and
what the products mean to our customers-what we did
during the pandemic that helped keep restaurants and
venues going. " In addition, the company takes photos in
the field when a job is accomplished, " so they see the
connection to their work and how satisfying it is. "
Belliveau believes this program is a positive step in
ensuring the continuation of small businesses in the
industry. " With the support we offer, " he says, " it's all
working out quite well. "
